Just a shout out of thanks to Vic for his thread on fixing ice makers. I had the 'sticky wire arm' problem on my U-Line BI-95 and had to replace the micro switch. I had a little problem finding one as Radio Shack didn't have anything remotely close so I had to wait until the weekday to call the regional parts distributor - WL May. They sent me the switch, I put it in, thought it didn't do the trick (yeah, got impatient), called WL May back and ordered the icemaker and went back to the boat the next day and it was full of ice.

Thanks Vic for your gift that keeps on giving.

Marlin

Ps: Anyone need an icemaker? Can send it back but something is telling me to put it in storage :o)

Marlin, I have had great dealings with Vic on the phone, via e-mail and on this board. His effort's give Raritan a great name.

Well, guess what. Yesterday, just before leaving my boat I dumped the full bin of ice as I cleaned the interior and door seal with a bleach and water mixture. I thought I'd build new a new bin of ice since the ice maker was working so good.

Bammmpppp - got there today and there was one tray of ice in the bin and the wire arm was stuck in it's usual position - about 4 o'clock.

BUMMER!! I put a tiny bit of downward pressure on the arm and it dropped to it's parked position, the tray filled, the water froze, the arm lifted and stuck again.

Next step - ice maker or thermostat?

Try taping a quarter to the wire arm, to add a little weight to it, and see if that helps. Or, you can get a spray can of silicone spray (with the long, skinny nozzle) and spray around all the pivot points where the wire arm comes through the back of the control box area, to lubricate everything.

The quarter trick didn't do it. Even tried a socket. I was surprised the arm lifted, but stayed in the 4 o'clock spot.
Today, I'm going to take it apart and lube it up good internally and see if I can get another twist on the spring to see if that works. If not, out she comes and in goes the new one that I haven't returned yet.

Vic,

I resorted to rule number one, if all else fails, try, try again. I took the cover plate off the ice maker double checked the position of the spring, repositioned some wire nuts, put it back together and (God I hope I'm not jinxing myself here) it works. It's been pumping out ice for 3 days now.

Thanks again for your help - not only with me, but others also.

Marlin

Marlin Mike,

My rule is, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

If again you don't succeed, cuss it up and down!

Finally if you don't succeed, smash it all to hell!"
