What insight can anyone provide me on Walter Vee Drives? Bullit proof or problematic? Weak points? Only have experiences with BW vee drives. Any comments appreciated.
They do have a good reputation for being very reliable. I am getting ready to do an oil change on my Walter V Drives and the manual calls for SAE 30 oil. It doesn't specify non-detergent but after a lot of researching and speaking with the folks at Walter they do prefer you use non detergent but said it would be ok to use detegent SAE 30. I had purchased some HD SAE 30 thinking the HD stood for Heavy Duty but I learned from a good source that HD stands for high detergent . That is really confusing because I believe HDEO stands for Heavy Duty Engine Oil.
Anyway I took back the HD and all they had in non detergent was some cheap non-detergent SAE 30 API SA (which is for autos built before 1930). It probably would have worked fine since the oil is only for lubrication but for my piece of mind I went to O'Reilys and piked up Valoline SAE non detergent API SB.
They are pretty tough, solid units. I still lament letting those two RV-26s go in my old Mariner when I sold it. My current boat has the older, flimsier RV-20s and they are just fine. Keep it oiled, keep the sending units and lights working right, and pay attention to the lamp - if it doesnt go out when you increase RPMs get the boat fixed. And you will be ok...
