I am thinking of leaving Greenport,NY and going
to Newport,RI with a possible stop over at
watch hill for one over night before proceeding
to Newport.
What advice where is good to anchoring and what else to do while at Watch Hill.

Holding ground is great. Either a Delta or Danforth anchor should be fine. Winds kick up in the afternoon, what's new right? Plan on 6" to 12" chop all day and night. Harbor is open to the west so the chop comes in. Not much to do, small restaurants, shoppes, ice cream shops. You could walk the town and browse in less than one hour. Nothing off of the main drag except houses. No dogs aloud on the beach, this is a new law, which really sux. Follow the bouys in towards Stonington then follow Clockwise around Sandy point. I do not have the exact bouy data sorry. Most boats anchor in 6' to 12' of water. Gets crowded on the weekends. When you find a spot, set out pletty of scope, try and anchor around similar boats with similar scope. So if the wind shifts you will be OK. We are there almost every weekend if not "out to see"

Thank you for all info,if everything go's as planned we will be leaving Greenport early Monday morning in our 36 hunter saiboat and 5' draft.

Tom, or anyone else with knowledge of this area-

What do you know about the "channel" that runs between Napatree and Sandy Point? Saturday I was anchored at the far western edge of where everyone anchors behind Napatree (in the "kitchen") and watched all day as boat went through that passage at speed. I could see a few flags sticking up, almost as if the channel is actually marked? I draw about 2-1/2 feet, but the charts show submurged pilings. When we go out of Watch Hill, I always go down to the point and out by Stonington. On a busy day, being able to safely cut through that area could possibly save 1/2 hour or so.

Dan

I would love to hear the answer. I have no knowledge of that passageway, except that I see boats zip through at high tide all of the time. I guess i will ask some people at my marina and see if i can plot it out for us. Heading there this weekend
