I just had a pre- purchase oil analysis completed and the results have been bothering me.
I am concerned about the water in this report . Here are the readings.

This diesel engine sounds good. At full throttle holds steady at 175F same as cruise.
No smoke on cold start, or oil on water. The surveyor found nothing wrong with the engine.
The engine has not been run much in the last 6mo Total hrs 1428.

Here are the results of my oil sample came back on this TAMD40A, done by Motor Check Analysis - West Palm Beach FL 33409

aluminum 0 - chromium 7 - copper 11- iron 84 - lead 20 - tin 0 - silicon 3 -potassium 9 sodium 14 - water 0.3A - oxidization 7.7 -
viscosity 13.7 - fuel <2.0 - tbn 9.1 - sae43 - soot 0.5

Comments on report: A= Abnormal

All engine wear rates normal. Light Concentrate of water present. Drain oil and change filter if not already done . Resample at next service interval to monitor.

Is this concern before I close the deal on this vessel ?
I called Motor Check and they gave me a big disclaimer speech. The disclaimer speech made me skeptical on the integrity of the engine,
but they said... boater to boater no problem its just condensation.

since sodium is normal and chlorine absent it is not likely sea water. No mention of glycol so probably not AF so condensation is the likely culprit. ask the test service to verify my observations. A long hard run to cook off water than a retest would be an idea.

Glycol was - ND (Not detected)
Thx Bruce

Condensation most likely since it has not been ran very much recently.

cruisepilot,

Change the oil, load test the engine and resample if you want to be sure.

I have to agree with the lab, if the oil hasnt been changed and the engine has not been run in some time its most likely just condensation.

This may not be fair--but that is most likely my "old" Carver 30 aft cabin. I am 99.99% sure that is condensation. It is a good boat and the engine is in good shape. I purchased the boat in 2000, and had the engine gone over by a top notch volvo certified mechanic before I brought it up form Clear Lake TX. I also put in the Bow thruster. We changed out all of the hoses and belts, redid the turbo etc. I used the boat for 2 years and sold it to another friend, because I moved to a new home where there was not enough water to get over the sandbar in the winter, and went to an I/O express and then a twin outboard cat. The current owner purchased the boat from that friend--and has used it intermittantly over the last couple of years. We went side by side with them on a 400 mile cruise last year and the boat behaved perfectly.

Bob, Sounds like you are the man! "CA" told me the boat came from the Houston area. This Carver is one of a kind, as you know.. with the single Volvo Diesel. I just recieved a email from VOLVO tech after they reviewed the complete sample report and they agreed it was condensation, and said it looks like a good engine. The deal has been closed, and I am looking forward to this Carver. It will be trailered to Jacksonville FL, then I'll take it up the ICW to Beaufort SC , where it will be based downtown.

I suspect it might be easier to run the boat on its own bottom, the whole way if Lake Okeechobee water levels were appropiate. Friday the navigable depth was 3.95 feet--the boat would make that, but there is little room for error. I ran the boat several thousand miles with zero problems. It is a great coastal cruiser or "loop" boat. Even good for the Bahamas, with shoal draft and good tankage.

I found an old Carver employee who remembered buiding these boats. He told me they were basically the prototype for the Carver 32 Aft Cabin. The hull extension actually gives the waterline length of the 32. There were two single diesel and two dual diesel boats with the volvo's apparently built. I have seen the two twin diesels advertised thru the years, but not the other single. There were also some built for the UK and Australia which had Cummins/Mercruiser diesels in them--and a slightly different cabin layout.

Before I owned the boat it spent its entire life in a semi fresh water environment at Bal Harbour Clear lake. The first owner sold it to his next door neighbor, then I purchased it. The water in Bayou Chico where it is located now is brackish.

Sort of nice to know that your old boat is going to good hands! Enjoy the boat!
