In my Carver 356, I get water coming from the inside of the swimlatform area to the aft bilge whenever I go up on plane. Does anyone out there have any ideas?
 
I always have some water in my aft bildg dry everywhere else
1995 356 I can't find where it is coming from.
 
Rudder shafts - they are packed - need to be tightened?
 
My rudder shafts seem to be ok, but will try and look at them on my next run. I am guessing to check my exhaust ports will be difficult? Is there any area more likely to leak than others?
 
there should be inspection covers/ports in the aft cabin to view your exhaust ports...one in the head, and one outboard of the bed.
 
I have always noticed that on my 325 that after I come off plane, water tends to splash on top of the swim platform, so don't discount a leak coming in from the topside as well.
 
are you sure it is not water that moves aft when on plane?
 
Bruce; I have covered off the transfer hole ahead of the aft bilge pump, which isolates my shower sump and holding tank area. This area is staying dry and only the aft area is getting water. I had my wife at the helm (don't yell at me for that), and I could see a bit of water coming forward from my swim platform area to the aft bilge, which is why I believe it is coming forward from there.
 
Doesn't make sense that water "comes in" only when you are on plane... unless your strut mounts or rudder seals are leaking (I suppose it is possible that the trim tabs could leak depending on how they were mounted). The rest of your exposed fittings should be out of the water at that speed.
 
I've heard of some trouble with swim platforms needing to be re-bedded/sealed.. dont know if this is the cause.. One thing.. when the boat is out of the water.. water inside would probably come out the same way it gets in...
 
Please let me know how you make out. I just discovered the same thing on our 356. Ours is a 2000 where the swim platform is part of the hull and I don't believe it's the rudders. I will look into the exhause port.
 
To find the problem think about what’s different when on plane. Boat angle, more exhaust water flow, more shaft seal flow or rotation, more shaft vibration , more rudder stress, more strut stress etc
 
After using the vessel on the weekend, we did all of our travelling at 6-8 kts. We put 3-4 hours of running time, and found NO water in the aft bilge. After loooking in the area again, I do not believe the water is coming from the rudder shafts as all my water is coming in from the swim platform area. (the rudder shafts are ahead of this area) I will try trim tab area next.
 
If you have a shower sump in this area, the water may be coming from a leaking or non-functioning sump pump or container. I had this problem.

I did have a problem with the shower sump pump when I first boat the boat. The previous owner put a new unit in and plumbed it backwards. Believe it or not, he had the outlet going into the air conditioning drain pan instead of going overboard. Since then, I have isolated my bilge areas, and find the area around the shower sump and aft holding tanks dry. I was out again on the weekend, and was up on plane for about 2 hours, and have water coming in the same area. Still cannot determine where it is coming in from. I tried not using tabs first, but still got water coming in. I will probably wait for haul-out and look around then.
 
Naut Home, we have a Carver 355 and have similar problem with water in the aft bilge area which only arrives after the boat has been run. It has a gas type odor but no gas leaks have been found. Does yours have an odor to it? Before commissioning last Spring, we were cleaning out the bilge and noticed water leaking out of the swim platform seams behind the chrome trim. I took the chrome trim off and caulked behind it but wonder if this is related and still have water coming in the aft bilge.
 
Summer Sled. I originally thought the water had a bit of holding tank smell, but after cleaning it out a couple of times, the water seems to be relatively clear and odour free. I have thought that the water is getting in from the seam area, but have not proved it yet. I am hoping when I pull the boat out in a few weeks, I may see my problem.
