Water seeping out of my fresh water connection.

Hello all,

I have a 2001 Carver 356. I noticed yesterday that water is leaking back out of my fresh water connection where the dock water hose connects.

It actually had emptied my water tank and left the pump running continuously. I shut the pump off, refilled the water tank, and turned it back on and that's when I noticed the leak. The pump was coming on about every 15 seconds or so and running for 3 or 4 seconds to repressurise the system. Of course, this pressure is what's forcing the water back out of the hose connection.

I'm ASSuming this leak is due to a faulty one way valve or pressure regulator?

I checked the manual and it's not detailed enough to indicate if or where this boat has a one way valve or regulator.

So, before I go exploring, does anyone have an idea where I might find it? It was already late in the evening when I found this out and I didn't have time last night to look too much into it, but I plan on heading back to the boat today to see what I can find.

Any feedback from you guys would be greatly appreciated! :)

The fresh water connection on most boats is the one way pressure valve as well.
Look behind this inside the boat and you will see it.

Do you have a water pressure regulator where your fresh water hose attaches? They go bad, mine just went and water was spraying out of the relief hole on the outside. I'm going to get rid of mine this winter and replace the one-piece unit with a separate in-line regulator and a straight hose connection.

There is an inline regulator / check valve between the pump and the fresh water connection. I have seen plastic ones but they are typically brass looking on Carvers. On my 350 I have an access panel behind the couch. If you can find the regulator / check valve, remove it from the system, look inside of it and sometimes they get clogged up with debris. If so, clean it out and reinstall it. If it is not clogged, the spring behind the plunger could be worn or broken. Bring it to any RV or marine retail shop and they should be able to match it up. It should be less than 30 dollars.

IMO the problem is in your pressure pump it should not be pressurizing in both directions.

Good catch Bruce. I 2nd looking at the pump first before looking anywhere else.

It's not the pump! The city water hookup is just attached to a cold water line that should and would be pressurized whenever the pump is on. The city water inlet has failed and is leaking it simply needs to be replaced, this is not uncommon and an easy cheap repair.

OK we need to know if his street water was on or not.

Street water was not on. The hose wasn't attached and I witnessed it coming out of the street water connection.

I didn't make it out there yesterday since we got really busy at work (good problem, right?).

I should be out there around 2pm today. I'll definitely post what I find here.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. Very helpful stuff!

OK then the pump was indeed providing backflow pressure which it should not do.

Please explain your thoughts on this because I'm clearly not following. The pump it going to pressurize the entire water system with the exception of the fresh water tank feed. The city water is simply tapped into a cold water line at any point so it is going to be pressurized the hook up has an internal back flow check valve that is supposed to prevent the water from leaking out. I the check valve fails then you loose all your water and the tank will empty and the pump will continue to run. This is exactly what he described as his problem but maybe I'm missing something it wouldn't be the first time:)

So I got it figured out today. I had to replace the shore water connection, which had a small pressure regulator/one way valve built into it (as a few people here indicated).

To clarify, see the image below for the exact part I replaced. You can't see the regulator in the image, but it's attached to the rear of the water entry fitting. I also included the plumbing diagram that my boat uses for those wanting to get an idea about how the pressure works on my particular boat.

Thanks again for all the help. The fix was quick and painless! :)

Exactly what I was saying. Was gonna say take off 4 screws and you will see the whole unit but I know not all boats have the one you show. My old boat did, my new boat is different.

Easy fix! And hopefully cheap!

I had the exact same problem with my '98 355. Water was leaking at the shore connection. Since I never use it and am inclined to think using it is a problem waiting to happen, I removed the hose from the shore connection and plugged it. Problem fixed. If anyone is thinking of doing this just remember you must remove the plug when you winterizing and allow anti-freeze to flow into the plugged hose. Also make sure you attach the hose to the swim platform shower fixture on the inside so you can retrieve it later.
