From Boating on the Hudson
The Crossing at Kings Ferry
Verplanck, New York has been selected to host this years Patriot's Weekend on August 25th, 26th & 27th. 2006 Commemorates the 225th Anniversary of the March to Victory at Yorktown, Virginia by the American & French Armies in 1781. A crucial part of that March was the crossing of the Hudson River using King's Ferry between Verplanck's Point & Stony Point. This event will feature an entire weekend of Living History in Historic Verplanck & include an actual crossing of the Hudson River using reproduction 18th Century Watercraft.
With a jam packed itinerary planned here is a short briefing of what's in store; Saturday 10 AM Public & Media meet “General Washington" & “General Rochambeau". Followed by Unit Drills & Tactical Weapons Demonstrations. 1 PM the troops march to the Historic Post Hancock House (Washington's Headquarters for a week in 1781), on Kings Ferry Road where Washington will recreate the presentation of medals to the captors of Major John Andre the British Spy. There will be Camp Demonstrations on Riverfront throughout the day. 2 PM 18th Century vessel makes it's way to Haverstraw Marina while smaller boats row across to Stony Point where Drills & Musket Demonstrations will be performed. 3 PM Period Vessels return with troops to Steamboat Dock on Verplanck's Point. (All boats will be escorted by Coast Guard, Fire Department & Police). Later in the evening, 8 PM, there will be Period Music followed by a Fantastic Firework display at 9 PM that will feature a grand finale shot from both Ferry Landings!!
On Sunday activities both continue then wind down with Morning Services on the Riverfront, more Tactical Weaponry Demos, Ladies Tea under the Gazebo, a Memorial for Soldiers killed at Fort Lafayette, Daughters of the American Revolution lay a wreath. A great photo op. Transport yourself back in time... with a camera.
