Sep 22 2006 purchased a 2001 35' chaparral – surveyed in above avg condition. (<10 eng hours & 48 on Genset)
During Sea trail noticed wet spot on the carpet in the cabin – everyone passed it off because the sink faucet was on when we turned the water pump on and we assumed (yeah.. I know) water splashed from the cutting board to the carpet.
Long story short – anchor locker drain is not sealed –
Removed the anchor locker outside fitting, all they did was drill a hole and slap a fitting on the outside hull – no thru hull – no sealer inside the hole. There was nothing to stop the water when it drained out the hole to soak into the core. The core (inside the drain hole) is extremely wet and very soft. (water only came into the carpet/bilge area when we unplugged the anchor locker drain after filling with water.)
There are no signs inside the boat that there was frequent water intrusion. Believe the boat was covered up for a number of years.
Plan was to stick a thru hull in or epoxy the inside of the hole. Would it be alright to go ahead with that or should something be done about the core. The surveyor has been very helpful, came out a second time to help me find the drain problem, should I have him come out and do a moisture test around the drain and aft ? It would be at / near the waterline – should I get the boat pulled out of the water for it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Just want to get this done right.
