Whales on the Sacramento River near Rio Vista

Nope. I was too busy taking care of my boat and slip this weekend. Worked hard on Friday, Saturday and Sunday! I'm pooped.

I'm wondering if the noise of traffic on the Rio Vista Bridge is making them turn upstream.......I remember they closed the bridge to traffic for Humphrey and then he proceed back to the ocean. Maybe they should try that again.

Mike Fitzgerald, Record columnist, had it right when he jeered at all the fuss over two whales while no one cares as a multitudes of endangered species fish are ground up in the pumps and the Delta is dying. -- Warren

You both are right, but the whales bring high rating to the local TV news.......it's all about the money, honey!

It's a whale of a story.

I was thinking the same thing about noise from the Rio Vista Bridge, Flutter. It's going to be tough to shut down traffic for a while though, there is a lot more traffic on the bridge than 20 years ago. Trying it at night may be dangerous to the whales.

Maybe early on Sunday morning would work. There is little traffic other than churchgoers (relatively few in the Delta) and a quiet parade of traffic from the Delta Loop in search of bloody mary fixings.

But then they did go under the bridge to get upstream in the first place. I'm not sure what time it was that they went under it, though.

I think they should try running the tug and see if they follow it. Many of the experts are calling it a coincidence, but then we don't know everything there is to know about whales so maybe there was some sort of sound that attracted the whales. After all, they do rely on sound for navigation and communication.

I hope the whales figure it out and get back to the ocean. The fresh water is not a good thing for that wound since the bacteria will thrive in that environment and the wound will get much worse very quickly. The salt water will help.

Here is my take, for what it's worth:

We need a combination of an incoming tide, the bridge up, so no traffic noise, and maybe the sounds broadcast in front of the whales.

Since she naturally wants to travel north, going south with anything which spooks her will be a problem. I think the bridge noise is a key element under these circumstances.

Just my two cents worth----and you get what you paid for this opinion!!!!

Today a dead whale was found near Angel Island; not Delta or Dawn, but might be why they do not want to travel towards the bay area. Maybe they know something we do not? I'm interested in learning what caused the Angel Island whale's death.

Could be something to it Liz. Remember a few years ago we had 2 or 3 whales wash up along the N entrance to the GG. At Bonita cove and Pt Diablo. It's really rare that and die IN the bay, though.
