What a weekend!

Our daughter was 2 months old when first on the boat, now she's a little over 2 and just did a 12 day block island trip. She had a blast with all the kids and things to do. When it was time to leave the marina to go home she gave my wife and myself a hard time, she did not want to leave the boat.
 
I just cant seem to find that magic. She likes going to the boat but that lasts for a few hours then that is it. I was planning on taking them to Croton this evening to go swimming but when I asked my daughter if she would like to go she gave me a hard time and got upset. We wanted to take the boat away for a long weekend but that looks out of the question too. Looks like a labor day pull out of the water.

I think you really to ask yourself who is the boss.. You or your 3 year old daughter..
 
Its not the point of making her go or not. It gets annoying when she is sitting there upset and bored out of her mind. Let's see, Screaming kid annoying everyone in the marina or go home. I'll bet 99% will tell me to not go to the marina.
 
hopefully sunday we can get out to croton and let the kids make friends. maybe if she plays with other little ones it will be better.

We should schedule a Kids Raft-Up, where families with younger kids can get some time on the water with other kids there age! Maybe this would help Boating_Rob's 3yr Old if she has fun playing with my 3 yr Old and others her age on the boats.

We did the same things we do with them now, take them on vacation, anchor in Croton, go tubing, etc... On vacation, we would find marinas with pools and towns with that were kid friendly. Actually, thanks to the kids, we met some great people who we have remained friendly with.

When they got old enough, we bought a dink and they loved going for rides on it. We would take them to shore and go to the playground. We would fish and swim, throw water balloons.
 
You took your 3 year old tubing? When they are older I can definitely see that.

We went to Croton last evening and was awesome out there. River was a sheet of glass. Did some swimming and had dinner on the hook. Came back in at dark. If I only had a bridge boat and no canvas the night would have been perfect but the 20 minutes to get the canvas up was the only downfall. My daughter loves the beach and playgrounds. Just not that many accessible by boat locally. We are still going to try for a Channel Club in August and maybe Kingston in the end of August or September.

We are seriously considering the Jersey shore for the boat next year. Possibly the sound as well since I work in Greenwich, CT and keeping the boat near there would make life easier than the drive to the Jersey shore. Just have to learn more about the sound and where would be a good place to look for a marina.

If we get through these years we do have a dink that is in my garage.
 
My girls are eight now and it does get easier each year. Fishing is always a good distraction, especially when they actually catch something. They love playing on the beach and exploring, bring the sand toys. Water baloons or water toys are also great. I usually always anchor where I can stand and they can stand nearby.

Last year was our first year with the dink and they absolutely love it (they were 7 then, 8 now). At this point, we let them row on their own around the marina and at Croton Point. The dink is absolutely the best toy they have, we rarely put the motor on. A dog helps keep them entertained as well. You're not a quitter if you need to put on a movie to keep them happy.

Three is a tough age but it does get easier with each year. Our trips begain when they were four, we always choose a place with a pool and a nice town nearby.

Again, it does get easier each year.

If you are concidering the sound I would recommend Castaway's in New Rochelle.
When we were they 3 seasons ago there were alot of small kids and they have a great pool.
 
Leigh, Funny this topic should come up. Was talking to a boater from NJ that boats in Stamford Ct. We were talking about how the sound has so much to offer, and you don't have to go all the way out to port jeff.
 
Once the younger one gets a bit older, she'll have someone to play with and relate to on the boat.

I do agree with you that with my 5 and 4 year old (boys), I've not spent a lot of time on the boat. They do like swimming etc. but we've only gone for at best a cruise up river and then an afternoon anchor to eat and swim.

I do want to try an over night yet this summer but was most likely going to bring the movie machine (still debating) to settle them down and them some books before bed time. Kids are different too - older one would find enjoyment in helping dad do different tasks on the boat. Younger one could care less. The admiral hasn't fully bought into the overnight idea yet due to the smaller boat which is another challenge.
 
We never made it to the marina again this week. We had a party in our backyard on Saturday and yesterday was a day of recovery, cleanup and trying to finish the leftovers and the leftover beer.

We may try again this weekend but not sure yet. Talked to a few people this weekend to see if they think I can get the boat home in my yard to let it sit there and rot for a few years. In the driveway it will work but I rather have it on the side in the back yard. The other option is to just store it in the back of a ship yard covered for a few years unless it sells.

We were still thinking of forcing the kids for a weekend at the Channel club or Rondout but really not sure how that would work out either.
 
yeah, we got up after lunch on sunday, but you were closed up. We had a quick run but spent most of the time cooling off in the pool.
 
I think the younger you get the kids on the boat the better, they will grow up around it and will not know the differance. It will be a normal thing every weekend to them.Like I said we could be driving home after the weekend of boating and my daughter will look and my wife and I and say are we going to the boat! I guess I'm lucky she enjoy's it so much.
 
My daughter has been on the boat since she was 15 weeks old. She was fine the past 2 years. This year is a whole new ballgame. Watching her have fun on the beach and playing with other kids in the yard was a whole lot better than confining her to a 30ft boat and a small cabin with not much to do at the age of 3.

Maybe you are in the running for a different (more kid friendly) marina..
At the end of last have were throwing around the idea of going back to Stony Point Bay because there are so many more young kids there, a short walk from the car to the boat, great pool, and fun people. We decided to do one more season at Haverstraw while our son was young enough to not know the difference.

You and I both know that Haverstraw is a great marina BUT it is primarily an adult crowd. I think we will be leaving next year for the sake of our son and his happiness.

I agree with you 100%. There is allot of fun to be had at Haverstraw and it is a more adult crowd especially in the past few years. The idea of SP is a good one and I do have I/O's in case I do want to take the boat out at close to low tide. Let me look into this idea.
