What happened at Bayshore marina last night?

We came back to Bayshore marina last night around 10:30 pm after seeing the fireworks at Davis Park. (SAT 08-11) I never seen so many Police boats at one place before. Also tons of fire and rescue vehicles on land. I smelled smoke but heard there was a collision. Did observe Suffolk County towing a boat away. Anyone know exactly what happened?

They were lucky. I had a friend rendezvous with his friend at night about 35 yrs ago. They thought the other one was idling waiting for the other one to approach them when they hit at planing speed. At least one died and maybe both-can't recall if it was just my friend-with the last name of Lazarus(yes, Lazarus but we never saw him again).
 
This does not surprise me, I have seen a lot of careless boating this year. Common sense has taken the summer off for some.
I just hope every one involved is OK.
 
I agree.. this year it seems like there are more idiots out there than ever. They ignore the rules and boat in a very careless way. Total disregard for the rules and right of way. It's time for mandatory licensing IMHO.
 
I spent the night anchored out in the bay to the west of the bridge, seemed like all sorts of stuff was going on. First there was some sort of accident on the Robert Moses bridge, police cars, rescues and fire engines kept coming, and then police boats were in the area. I heard something on channel 16 about a motorcycle accident, but then Islip harbor patrol said they had it under control and called off the other boats, so I'm not sure if someone went in the water or they just thought it could be and sent a boat. Anyone hear anything?

I left 16 on after that and then heard someone calling the coast guard and not long after the Lauren Christy was calling them with the report of people in the water and a possible collision. At that point rescue boats came from all over and there were flashing lights there for a while as everyone was picked up.

John news 12 said there was 2 accidents on the bridge a suv and a half hour later a motorcycle went off the bridge but they never did a follow up.
 
Louis, yep, now that you mention it there were 2 separate accidents, first something happened right over the main span but that didn't generate nearly as much activity as the second one a little further north. A half hour apart sounds right. Maybe the motorcycle went off the bridge but the driver stayed on.
 
yup.......... its in todays Newsday also............. 2 accidents on the R/M bridge.....and one boat accident in the Great South Bay.

I need to read the actual stories…. It got back to the club, Sunday morning that a car was abandoned with the engine running and doors open on the bridge around 9-10Pm on Saturday and was thought it was a jumper. It’s amazing how false rumors are created.

I couldn't find anything on Newsday's web page and didn't get the paper copy today. They had the bridge closed at one point, and at least 2 fire engines, a rescue and close to if not more than 10 police cars there I'd say. Since it was on the northbound bridge they all went racing down the southbound side to get across the bay to turn around and come back. One boat was down below after a while. When I went to bed there was still a flashing light in that spot so I assumed some damage (guardrail maybe) and they kept a car stationed there.

Sometimes it is just an accident and the involved are not idiots, seems to be the case at this point. But with that said, not having life jackets on the young kids would qualify that person as an idiot.

Tanqueray, I would better qualify you statement:

I would say: "MORE Idiots out on the water, period"

It kills me to see little kids on a boat without life vests, the second thing that kills me is to see kids and adults on the bow of the boat while the boat is crusing along.
When I see this I say to myself, WTF, if this ass does not know this I can only imagine what else he does not know.

I am afraid of heights so I would not be a jumper. If I wanted to end it, I would take my boat out in the roughest sea conditions and do it that way, reason being is; my family would no longer have a boat payment, and the life insurance would pay them. Plus, I could experience the adventure that Bob has. :)

We went to Nicky on the Bay last week and were totally amazed at the number of people blasting into BS marina through the no wake zone or had kids riding up front. I just can't believe it. Maybe a coastie writig some summons for that would help a little bit.
 
The guy on the motorcycle who died on the RM Bridge Saturday night was my third cousin. Neither he or the bike went over the side of the bridge, according to the reports my family received. Apparently he was tailgating behind a car, the car stopped short, and he slammed into the rear. He died, his passenger had minor injuries. May he rest in peace.

If you don't mind, could you tell me what his name is? Because I work with someone whose son, John, died in a motorcycle accident last Saturday. Didn't get the exact details. Wonder if he's the same guy.

Slats, sorry to hear the news. Based on the response that night I figured it was something pretty serious.
