What happened over here? This used to be the most active forum on BE. It has been quiet all year. Did we get tired of insulting each other and others marinas? Hard to believe.

I'm not on the Hudson so I guess I can't get in on that argument.

Sure you can, if I can argue with Hank who shares a finger then you can join the argument as well. Of coarse you will loose but that's just because you are not in Haverstraw which is clearly the best:)

So I'm up early, waiting for the crew to arrive so we can go patrol the start of the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament (kingfishtourmament.com). Relaxing reading the mail. First thing I see on BE: "Insulting" then "Finger..." Hmmm... Oh, PIER Finger! OK, y'all aren't playing rough (yet?).

Our marina is nice too, and very handy. Canal behind the house. But then again I have to maintain it. Have a great day.

I guess no one is boating on the Hudson anymore. The last couple of times I have been in Croton, it has been empty, hardly anyone is at our marina, and there don't seem to be many boats out on the water...

It has been quite at Bowline as well!
I guess boating was a passing fad and now it's on the way out.
Oh well it was fun while it lasted.

Your right Mike, they are all at our resort enjoying all it has to offer. Weekends at the resort are PACKED

Have to agree. It is hopping and not soi bad during the week either. Still too many boats never leave their slips. I'm out every weekend and that is certainly the exception. Croton used to be so packed, you had a hard time finding decent space to drop an anchor. No problem this year. On Sunday, there were about 4 boats at sunset and it was a perfect night.

I can give you a topic to ponder.

So some of us Long Island boats were talking about a fall foilage trip up your way.
I know it varies year to year but what's a good time frame to shoot for to see the best colors?
Thanks!

Yes, it changes a little each year but I would target mid october. Going up a little past West Point is a must. The mountains and foliage are spectacular. Of course you dont need to ask what marina you should stay at. The trip from Haverstraw to West Point is roughly 30 minutes.

I assume it starts earlier the higher you go? So if we went up to Roundout, it would be earlier?
Mid october is tough as people are pulling boats already by us and then there is the kids in school thing.
But thanks for the info!

I didn't buy my boat to sit on it at the dock all weekend... Hope you enjoy all those transients blasting music, taking over your docks and partying all night long...

You haven't been south lately have you?

I agree about sitting at dock. I never understood how 80% of the boats never seem to have anyone on them or leave the dock. I haven't seen or heard of any transient issues though. Certainly not down at the end where I am. The "T" is now transient but we have only had a couple of boats there this year and they were all very nice.

We trailered the boat to Greenwood lake last weekend just to be someplace different. We kept our previous boat there in the eighties. Nice clean fresh water to swim in and no tides. The marina we went to had only 3 empty slips out of 100. The other marinas were mostly full also. Practicly all boats were 22' or less. But on the weekend there weren't many boats out and this weekend was nice. There used to be 5 or 6 waterfront restaurants, now there are 2. I don't mind no crowds at Croton or at the lake. I'm still out there.

I don"t mind either. I much prefer Croton to Bowline but conditions have to be in our favor. We actually had a little excitement at Haverstraw last night. Coast Guard got an automated signal about a boat in distress at the marina. We had the fireboats, land firefighters, local police with their tenders, EMT and ambulances all show up. It was most likely someone hit their distress button on their radio or a short. Nothing was wrong but it was nice to see all the volunteers show up quickly and in force.

They could only track it down to the West dock. They did not know what boat it was but it was pretty clear that it was a false alarm. I did see bubbles coming from an empty slip but they did not have deep water divers available to see if anything was on the bottom. :)
