I seem to remember vinegar works. What concentration, or is there anything better?

i have heard, however not needed to try, a solution of muratic acid and water diluted to 1part muratic acid 10 parts water.

i generally just constantly use bromine (sp?) in my strainer and have been real fortunate.

In all my years of boating have not had to use any type of backwash for any of my AC's. I also have heard that a solution of muriatic acid will clean out lines. Have seen it work for neighbors toilet discharge hose. Nasty stuff; be careful.

Coils, not water cooler...
Most home stores like Lowe's and Home Depot have a mild a/c coil cleaner in a spray bottle.
Just follow directions.
If you use an acid that is too strong, it will corrode the fins.
