My 90 gal aluminum tank were already leaking (only 4 years old). After cutting the boat apart and removing it I could see it have been sitting on top of 3 u-shaped rubber strips/bands and it was corroded right where one of the bands had touched the tank. The tank was fastened to the boat through angle aluminum welded on the top sides of the tank. In one side of the tank they were broken a bit, so the tank was sunken down, and had been sitting a bit harder on the rubber bands than it should.
At the same time, my bilge pump wasn't working, so the bottom of the tank had been in the bilge water.
My question is: how is the proper way to install am aluminum tank? Should it be hanging totally free in the air (except for where it's mounted on the top), or is it ok to rest it on something like the rubber strips, IF I keep the boat as dry as possible?
Do you know how yours is mounted?
By the way, I called the manufacturer, RDS aluminum and they were nice to give me a new one for OEM price ($250) even though it wasn't covered by any warranty. I had them add 12 mounting tabs total, instead of the 6 the tank originally had.
