There was a thread a few months ago in Ask the Captain (I think) where everyone posted pictures. There were a large number of responses.

I don't believe either of those boats has a self draining cockpit, so...... yeah.

Picture four closely spaced five foot waves. It is a dead calm day, but the waves are caused by the wakes of two speeding 75 foot sportsfisherman. Your boat will be tipped up, bow down on the backside of the first wave, the second, third and fourth waves will completely fill that big HOLE in the front of both of those boats, ripping any canvas that covers it.

Your boat will be filled with water and you will likely sink, period. Your radio and cell phones have shorted out in the salt water, so you can't call anyone. The speeding sportsfisherman are long gone and not looking backwards. You are five miles from land, and no one else is around. Now comes the fog bank. Fire off all the flares you want, no one is going to see them.

Now your boat is submerged with just the top of the window showing. No one is going to see that on radar. Another big boat could run right over you, chopping you and your friends into little pieces with their big nasty propellors. They are not even going to notice they ran over something, other than a slight burp in engine revolutions.

Even if you don't get hit by another boat, you have about an hour before hypothermia starts to set in. You will likely be dead by the morning.

I recommend you call the boat's manufacturer and tell them you plan to run those boats to Block Island, and then call your insurance company. See what happens. Just do it.

There is a pretty good chance your boat company will void your warranty, and your insurance company will cancel your policy.

Chris, my insurance company says it's OK, as long as I stay within 15 miles of shore.

And, exactly where does this fog come from on a completely clear and dry day?

Void my WARRANTY by taking my boat in the ocean??? Are you kidding me? That's funny. ROFLMAO.

I may not own her but I get to play around on her on the weekends in the spring, summer and fall.

Bob, you'll notice how low the freeboard (Top of gunwale to the waterline) is on this boat. It's basically a bay boat. I do take her out in the ocean when I have to run on a call. Although I have more safety gear then you can think of as well as a list of precautions that I follow, I still get a knot in my stomach everytime I head out past the breakwater. I've been swamped by rollers over the stern and filled with water up to my calves. When bad thinks happen , they often happen without warning and happens quickly. Your 21' bow rider is a bay boat, like the priveteer pictured above. your boat should be used for it's intended purpose.
