hello all I'm going to shelter island thursday AM.
I'm beginning in sayville.
my options are :
go out fire island inlet and in shinecock inlet
go out moriches inlet and in shinecock inlet
go inside the entire way

i would like to leave early thursday morning to make the shinecock canal when i can lock through. should be closed between 445am-1045 am
i have only been out moriches inlet once and never through FI inlet. is Fi inlet marked?
thanks

I just went through FI inlet a few weeks ago. It is marked so you will not have a problem.

Walter and Dave will chime in about the inside route as they just went through with at least two 40'+ boats. I do not believe they had any issues.

IMHO, Moriches inlet needs local knowledge and I personally would not do that.

I am with you on the locks. I went through once when the gates were open and the current was ripping. Not fun.

I went in FI Inlet last Thursday returning to Patchogue from MYC with a 58' a Sea Ray. Very well marked and deep. I went in and out of Moriches Inlet last year but the sand bar has now extended in front of the Inlet again so I chose not to do it again. Could you? Yes. Should you? Probably not.

We did inside at high tide Ina windy day.
Lock was closed.
Inside is fine and you can stay on plane all the way except by red 24 with green 27 being the worst spot.
I would coast thru there and read the line of the water
Do not rely on your gps. Use your eyes.
The buoys and channels are not where your chart says.
You will
As for the lock, if it is open the water rips north to south and if your heading north it is doable.
Just got thru with power.
If the other direction then I would stop at Shinnecock and wait till it closes.

weather permitting go out FI and in Shinnecock. Thursday is looking good weather wise.

Thanks everyone! Weather looks good for tomorrow and I called towboat U.S. To get any changes for moriches, tide tools ok to go inside the whole way. I would like to go out fire island Inlet and in Shinnecock if I can but like the options.
What tide location do you use for FI inlet? Democrat point? Fire island breakers? Coast guard station ? What's best time to hit it obviously slack high?

I would not worry about tide going thru FI inlet, other than it could get ugly tide against wind if the wind is blowing. The same could be said about most inlets. Democrat Point is fine for FI tides.

We will be on shelter island Friday. Leaving block and heading there for a night. Be at coecles harbor.
