Who was at Croton Friday night?

We were out at Croton Friday night and man was that some storm that went through. The waves were crashing over my bow and the wind and rain were pelting the crap out of me. There were a few instances were the lightning was so close I felt my hair stand up.

I saw a good size boat leave and then come back 15 minutes later to wait out the storm. I hope everyone got home safe. I heard someone washed up on the beach, anyone know anything about them?
 
We were there, rafted up to two other boats. That was one hellacious storm. I watched it on my radar come across the bay and hit us dead on.

Makes you realize just how quickly the weather can go to hell!
 
Can you image how bad that could have been say in an inlet with a bowrider passing thru? WOW!

It was a really nice evening till that storm flew in out of no where...
 
I was on that big boat.

We thought we were going to beat it back in and guess not. Amazing storm. The boat was rocking pretty good.

Once it passed through it was a nice night.

If you were hanging by the point I was the 25' Sundancer off to your starboard side. Except for the lighning, I actually enjoyed it. I had a couple of guests who were not so fond of the action, but they all survived. We did however have a casualty, our Magna Kettle grill lost our burgers, as well as the gas valve/tank.

After it passed we took a nice leisurely ride back and watched the remaining lightning show from the dock.

It was a good experience, I am still learning how my boat handles during different conditions, and this was a nice test. Anyone know the details of what hit us? (Wind speed, wave height)

I saw you. I said they must be getting tossed around pretty good. That was crazy. They reported 50-60 MPH winds.
 
I would estimate 3' - 4' waves in Croton. What size magma? I have some extra valves.

I believe I saw you come in to Croton Friday, I was trying to read the name on the boat and beleive it was "Hogan ????"

It is a Magma Kettle Original (~14"). I inherited it with the boat last fall. I looked at buying a new grill and was amazed at a $180 price tag. If you have one you could part with, I would buy it off you. Let me know.

Mike, I'm pretty sure I have a regulator and venturi tube that will fit that grill on my boat. I'll let you know when I'll be up there and maybe you can stop by and get it.

That would be great!! I may not be around till later next week as the big 10 year anniversary is thursday and we are getting away for a few days.

I was just thinking about how I could have made it through the storm safer, or at least more comfortable for my passengers. Here's what I did, so maybe someone could critique me on this, and any pointers would be great, even the negative I can handle. ( 1)Buy a bigger boat)

1) Once the storm started coming I let out my scope a bit more 5:1+
2) I made sure everyone was comfortable and when it started kicking up pulled out life jackets for them to where or hold.
3) Started up the engine in case the Anchor broke loose I would be able to hold my position and possibly reset the anchor
4) I listened to the VHF weather channel and channel 16 for updates
5) put anything blowable away, secured anything loose, and closed up the cabin windows
6) Anyone concerned went into the cabin with the kids while me and my brother in law stayed above deck to keep an eye on the boat, weather, and surroundings
7) when the wind was pushing us abeam to the waves I used the engine to try and maintain the bow into the waves as best I could
8) Waited for the storm to clear and then reassesed the situation, all is well
9) Pulled the anchor and headed for home slowly and

Sounds like you had a good handle on things with the exception of scope. I consider 5 to 1 normal for a few hours on a sunny afternoon, 7 to 1 for an overnight and for a bad storm at least 10 to 1 for maximum safety.

But then I've rafted with the anchor nazi so I tend to be more cautious. ;)
