Everytime I come here I find that wifi is a mess... No free stuff and the pay services (securenet or jazztel) are compltely unreliable...

Since I had to get a new SIM, I ended up getting a prepaid Droid (Galaxy Ace) with data. BTC charges $30 a month for 1gig of data which is about 3 days of llay wifi.

Not a big fan of the droid OS but it includes a hot spot features which so far is working pretty well so I can use my iPhone for web stuff thru the BTC droid.

It certainly hasn't gotten better since we were there. Not bad in White Sound on Elbow Cay with Bahama's WiMax. Up in Hope Town it bogs down a bit because there are more people up there but down at Sea Spray the through put is good so far (knock wood).

No. But we do depend on it to pay bills, and stay in touch. So there. When you are here 6 months or so, staying in touch like that helps.

:D

Pascal, sorry I looked the video, then I looked at Deb and she looked at me, and we both said, "Pascal".

Man why the anger? In my world this is the season of peace.

Batelco has trouble with the land lines. I would guess you guys would have been SOL, back in the day, when we only had AM and/or S.S.B. radio to get info/weather in the Islands.

Best advice I every got from a Bahamian was "If you want it to be like home, stay at home".

During my trips I've found Batelco to be much more reliable than Wi-Fi in the Abacos. I have no idea about Nassau. I miss the days of "unlimited" Verizon Global Roaming. That was awesome while it lasted.

Keith, I'm guessing times have changed since the 1960's? :-)

We don't expect it to be like home, if we did we'd be pushing for laws and changes like the 2nd home owners over here.

:D

I hate to hear there is trouble in paradise. It's only 39 degrees here in NC, but the My-Fi works great. [^]

Well It s been 10 days now and I m happy with the droid hot spot set up.

It works very well in Nassau and within 15nm speeds are a lttle alower than 3G in the US but very acceptable. In the exumas it s pretty slow so pay Wifi is better if you want more than basic emails and slow we surfing

It looks like the 1 gig limit on the $30 is for 4G which I can't say that I have experienced even in Nassau. Initially i was told it was a hard limit but got an alert 2 days ago saying I had reached 1 gig and would be throttled back. Haven't seen much if a difference...

Posting this about 7 miles off Normans Cay. Not bad!

Btw Atlantis has set a new record for marina wifi... $19.95 a day! Well worth the $30 a month plan...

And now if you register your prepaid BTC nr, a single phone call you can recharge it on line with a CC.

I've been touting BTC sim-card usage for years. Chatter forums at Explorer Charts website has up to date information. Adding a compatible GSM amplifier (such as a Wilson) and an external antenna greatly increases range. Built-in hot spots on Android phones are very useful, but this can also be done using a BTC SIM in a compatible USB modem and a router (Cradlepoint). The advantage of a USB modem is, depending on model, the ability to hard wire the amp and external antenna.

It s working pretty well at Staniel this morning, slow but usable. As they say on the Exumas Wifi sign up screen, the key to happy surfing is to click on the link, get a sip of your Kalik, check the screen and repeat till the page loads. Works with BTC data too:)

Because my iPhone is locked and I can't use a BTC sim... And even if i could get it unlocked, i still want a second phone so that guests can use it instead of using mine.

And also this way i still get calls and messages on my 305 nr

FYI: As of now all Verizon 4G LTE phones that have global (GSM, etc.) roaming abilities are unlocked. I called to get my current Droid unlocked and they told me there is no longer a need to do so. It will be wise to spend $5-7 on a SIM card cutter too. BTC uses regular SIMs. Droids use Micro SIMS, and the new iPhone (5) uses a Nano SIM.

Sim card cutters. I was surprised to see one could get away with something like this even though the chips are (I assume) very small.

When I bought my latest phone (brand new in box, but off-contract via Craigs List to save my unlimited data plan), I had to cut from standard to Micro. It was a piece of cake and the adapters work so I can put the same SIM back in my USB modem. I bought a Nano cutter too and from the looks of it it should work fine. It's the contacts area that's the important part. The rest is just plastic.

I find it very cool that Verizon not only has unlocked most of their new phones, but they have no issue with swapping SIM cards back and forth between devices (it's even posted as such on their website). We were away at our ski place over the holidays and I had to re-format and recover a hard drive. I ended up using around 6 gigs of data. I called them to confirm and they said "you're unlimited, no problem".

kurt have your compared the BTC over the air to Bahamas WiMax?
