Will San Francisco host the next America's Cup?

It would be fantastic but, according to several foreign newspapers, this is the first time that the location of the next AC has not been announced right after the final race at the winning ceremony. This makes me think that the decision has already been made but not yet disclosed to the public to make it look like they analyzed the pros and cons of each location. Larry Ellison is not the type of person that waits at the last minute to make important decisions.
 
Ellison also said that he's waiting to hear from all of the teams involved in 2013 because they must approve the venue. Because SF has never hosted the cup and doesn't have the facilities right now, that would make sense.

Could SF get a proposal together quickly, get the environmental impact reports done and approved and have have facilities ready by 2013? I don't know.

Newport isn't ready to host the cup without development, either. They haven't hosted since '83 and things have changed since then.

This is CA and worse yet, the S.F. Bay Area!

EIR's and the related approvals could never happen that fast! [:-propeller]

I rank getting this blow-boat race here in the Bay Area right up there with getting another Super Bowl and that pipe-dream of a bullet train actually running! [:-bonc01]
 
Fast tracking all of those permits and EIRs? I don't know if any US city could get that done in time, let alone SF.
 
SF bay is a fabulous venue for racing but I dont know if the course would fit. The Golden Gate Yacht Club is way too small to host an America’s cup. There are several areas in Richmond and Sausalito with the land side space if rentals could be worked out.
 
Oh heck, there is plenty of space on the SF waterfront that could do the job, too. It's just a matter of getting the job done. No one is considering GGYC as a facilities location.

I don't have any trouble with blow-boats or blow-boaters. In fact, I'd rather share a Delta anchorage with blow-boaters than delta destroyers any day. I have a low tolerance for 120db of Garth Brooks' Greatest Hits all day long.

No reason why Oakland, Richmond or any other Bay Area City couldn't make a good host city as well, as pdecat mentioned.

I don't see any imagined trouble coming from environmentalists. Remember: Teabagging a bay is water pollution.

As discussed in ATC it s a tricky situation. Typically it takes a 3 miles radius to set up a course if similar to the last few cups before 33 and there is only one aera large / deep enough in SF bay, right inside the GG bridge with heavy traffic and currents

however this week Larry Ellison indicated that they could set up a course close to the city which would offer spectacular views, increasing exposure

i don't think there is room in Newport for all the shore side infrastructure but I am even less convinced that the cup should be raced for in a closed bay...
 
Most of the racing could be outside the Gate with the start and finish inside the Bay. There is alot of vacant space in a number of Piers along the Embarcadero. I am sure the City of SF will figure out how to miss this opportunity that seems to be the only thing they can do on a consistent basis.

I would love to see this come to SF. We have the most spectacular sailing in the world.
 
You can't beat the breeze during the summer. I'm a power boater I rarely miss an issue of Latitude 38. The price is definitely right, in fact you can always download the complete mag for free.

Pascal: 20+ knots every afternoon in summer right off the SF shore. Strong tides but great wind so I cant imagine why you think the race shouldn’t be in the bay. The big boat series ever year is great racing. It would be the best Americas race from a spectators point of view and true sailors conditions.

Because the AC is supposed to take place in the ocean, per the DOD and tradition, but indeed if would be great from a spectator perspective and to increase exposure
 
IIRC the DoG says racing on an "arm of the sea" SF bay clearly qualifies.
 
Legally yes especialle if if the challengers agree, it just doesn't feel right
 
I dont know if you have spent much time on upper SF bay but it sure feels like the sea to me. Far different conditions than Biscayne bay.
 
This is from the deed. By mutual consent from all teams involved, there is a great deal of latitude regarding the chosen course.

The Club challenging for the Cup and the Club holding the same may, by mutual consent, make any arrangement satisfactory to both as to the dates, courses, number of trials, rules and sailing regulations, and any and all other conditions of the match, in which case also the ten months' notice may be waived.

In case the parties cannot mutually agree upon the terms of a match, then three races shall be sailed, and the winner of two of such races shall be entitled to the Cup. All such races shall be on ocean courses, free from headlands, as follows: The first race, twenty nautical miles to windward and return; the second race an equilateral triangular race of thirty-nine nautical miles, the first side of which shall be a beat to windward; the third race (if necessary) twenty nautical miles to windward and return; and one week day shall intervene between the conclusion of one race and the starting of the next race. These ocean courses shall be practicable in all parts for vessels of twenty-two feet draught of water, and shall be selected by the Club holding the Cup; and these races shall be sailed subject to its rules and sailing regulations so far as the same do not conflict with the provisions of this deed of gift, but without any times allowances whatever. The challenged Club shall not be required to name its representative vessel until at a time agreed upon for the start, but the vessel when named must compete in all the races, and each of such races must be completed within seven hours.
