This time of year can get problematic when the wind comes up on the water. We all may have favorite places to hole up if the wind gets nasty and I would like to know some of yours. Everyone knows that behind Decker Island is not bad in the wind and I personally like Disappointment and Shag Sloughs. Any others out there that can offer a little protection.

Little Mandeville has an "elbow" referred to as Horseshoe Bend, near Connection Slu, has good shelter.

Just about any slu or waterway which runs north to south will give shelter from the wind on the west side anchored near the shore/levee, etc.

No useful information here, just concurrence. I've been working on the boat every day after work and on the weekends, and it's fully exposed to the wind where it sits. Dang! The other day I was crossing from my taxi boat to the project boat with my glasses perched atop my head and the wind was strong enough to blow them off and deposit them in the water. Half-empty soft drink cans skid across the deck and dump out on something important. Sawdust becomes a dust storm. If I'm trying to measure the height of a cabin side I have to hold the bottom of the tape measure with my foot to keep it from flying away. Patiently wait for a calm to do some painting, and the wind will surely follow and deposit all manner of junk in the tacky paint. OK, rant over, just really sick of the wind.

I have been around the delta for more years than I care to mention and champion it to all who are boaters, fisherman, meanderers and just laid back individuals. I always tell them the delta is great in winter, spring, summer and fall. Heat won't be bad, cold is fine with a cozy cabin and a little "lemonade" as Hal used to say, rain never bothers anyone but dang it, when the wind blows on the old swamp, it tends to cause significant difficulties. Anything except wind.....anything.

I like the wind! Of course it sometimes curtails my boating, but that's ok. It's when the wind lays down that the delta becomes hot and humid and I just die. So I carry a couple of fans on my boat [2 of 110 and one 12 volt] so there is "wind" on my boat if mother nature won't supply it. Seems I'm very intolerant of humidity........

Flutterby,

I too don't much care for a hot, humid, windless day but as long as the boat is moving, you're pretty much ok. As we all know, there is wind and there is WIND. But anything over a 15-20 mph breeze can create havoc with anchors, docks, fishing lines, waves, nearby boats and the normal good natured gentleman that I am.

I've never had a problem being anchored in a strong wind. However, getting anchored when alone can't be done with more then a breeze! So if I'm going out to anchor, I leave in the AM prior to the delta winds kicking up. Dock is a bit more difficult, but I can always just "force" my way back into my slip.

Last August we had a strangely windy day with gusts up to 50MPH! Our club had scheduled a cruise out to Stockton Yacht Club for Fri, Sat and Sun. Fri the winds were howling, but by 1PM the tide was a strong incoming---going east with the wind. So I timed my trip to ride the tide and tail wind avoiding the SJ Channel as long as possible. When I entered the Channel up above Lost Isle the waters were smooth with no chop at all.

When I arrived at the yacht club, I discovered that my club was arriving by car because of the winds! I received a standing ovation at dinner and an award at the next club meeting! It pays to have experience....when it is windy never fight the tides and never head west into the winds.

I hope you also got a free drink or two that night for your efforts. If anyone wants to see some real "fun", watch those big 56 foot house boats try to turn corners, anchor or do anything else at all in a good stiff wind. The broadsides of those things are like sails on a sailboat and any kind of control is iffy. I all but wrecked one one day in some 35-40 mph delta winds and by the time the damage was calculated it cost our group about 400.00 extra dollars......buts thats another long, sad story that brings joy to the hearts of my "friends"

Did you note in the Scuttlebutt that H&H no longer rent out houseboats? What will the wakeboarders do now??????

Let come up behind 14 ft aluminums and jump those 3 inch wakes all day
