Windlass photo's?

I'm thinking of installing a windlass on my 1999 Regal 242. Is there a particular type that is better than others? Does one fit better because of the opening for the rope/chain being located on the right side of the bow? Anyone have any pictures?

It's a Lewmar, but I don't have more info now, I have to check on the boat tommorow.
 
No picture of mine, but this is what I had before installation of a Lewmar 700H. It's a horizontal mount, all stainless, and handled rope and chain. Capstan is directly behind the cleat with the motor side to the left (as you see it in the pic)

I have thought of doing this very same thing, but I'm not sure how to support the area I would install a windlass. I'm anxious to see if anyone chimes in about this.
 
My foredeck is a good 1 1/2" thick! I ought to know--it was sloooow going making the cut-out for the windlass. More than enough to support the strain, especially so with large backing plate. Go for it.

I was wondering if I was going to have to cut a hole to mount it or if there was one made to fit over, or partially over the anchor rode compartment. Looks like I'll have to cut to fit according to the windlass. Then the chain and rope just goes into the compartment and are still accessesable.

When (if) you get a chance...what model is the Lewmar? Is it over sized or under sized? In other words, for lake anchoring could I buy a lower capacity (cheaper) one???

Even though I have a different model, I have the same Lewmar switch on the dash. I never could figure out why they want you to push up to go down, and down to go up! WTF! I wired mine correctly and painted black over the "down" & "up" letters.

Yes, completly stupid the way of the switching. You give me a good idea. Maybe put some white 'Alfac' letters the other way.
 
The "down & up" is confusing - I made labels that read "in & out" instead.
 
I wonder if we could add a windless to our 280??

Does anyone have a 277, 280, 290 around the late 86-92 timeframe that has a windless they can show?

I see the windlasses but I do not see any way of mechanically securing them. A lanyard of some sort is usually used to fasten the anchor in its launcher. The spool on the windlass, at least my Simpson is not designed to always hold tension. What would happen if the motor drifts or lets go on a boat that is up on plane. Oh crap, that happened to me back in 1992 zipping across Newport, RI harbor. Lessons learned.

I understand what you mean.I have also been thinking about that.

First think I do, when the anchor is "up" or "down", is to push the red button on the breaker...That cuts electrical power to the motor.

Of course you can always put a stap or any mechanical stop in order to keep the anchor safely stored. But what happens if you need to let it go in an emergency situation, like engine failure near rocky coast? I won't let the Admiral go in front and release the system in that case, especially with bad sea conditions...

i would really try to get that clamping plate, it's needed to spread the load. if the deck is cored (hard to tell) you really want to make sure it is sealed with more than some sealant. when moisture gets in there, it's going to weaken the small area the bolts are holding on.

is that cleat original ? i cant believe regal would install a cleat that way, it looks like whoever installed the windlass, may have relocated the cleat there. a cleat should NEVER be installed so that the line pulls it out, only at angle. i really hope you have a BIG thick backing plate behind that cleat, or else never tie your rode there to work your anchor...
 
Pascal, that is the location of the cleat on the 24xx series. I don't have a windlass and my cleat is in the exact same spot.
 
it's odd... a cleat should never be installed in a way such as the most likely direction will be straight out, even with big washers or a backing plate. a bow cleat, for the rode, should be flat on deck, where the windlass is in Joel's pictures, so taht the forces are applied sideways.

Yes the cleat is original , put there by Regal. It is supposed to be used to tie the anchor rope when there isn't a windlass. I hope there is a big thick backing plate behind it...I don't have access there...

I'd like to find that missing clamping plate... I'll try to contact Simpson here in Europe... I just discover this fault by making pictures for Michael, it is realy not easy to see something there. I aim for those pictures "blindly".
 
Joel, if we could fit our head inside the anchor locker door, we certainly wouldn't be able to get it out!!. I figured you just stuck the camera in there and pressed the shutter button a few times!!
