Worst boating experince ever today

in the channel parallel to the Wantagh parkway, guy in a clam boat comes flying out of the flats across the channel im in, I pull back throttles and turn to avoid him, starts screaming obscenities to me and telling me he had right of way, then proceeds to start calling me a jew bastard. I was appalled. on the way back in, guys in a speed boat are coming opposite direction, I turn hard port to give them direction, guys turn back and right into me, and continue on their path without even looking up.

In my man years of boating in the waters of Nassau's south shore have I ever experienced something like this. the lack of courtesy and common sense gets worse every day.
 
I really hate to hear stories like this. It seems there are no depths to which s**theads like that will not descend. All you can do is shake it off, cinsider the source and enjoy your boating.

That's why I never left port on a weekend.....too many weekend warriors.
 
You haven't lived this crap until you go around Peanut Island down in Florida on Memorial Day. We came back from the Bimini and drove in the Lake Worth Inlet to North Palm Beach.
Words cannot describe. Besides, they would be blocked by the site.
 
I think he took a guess I was one, race and religion is something I would never mess with

Man, that's a card carrying fact, even as far up the coast as I live. That's why I never get in the boat on a week end or holiday. Let the jerks have it.

My wife would never record everything I say while boating on the weekend. Fortunately, I usually go from dock to inlet. You would be surprised at how stupid they act in the ocean as well.

I just assume they will do stupid things and will be rude about it.

It does seem to get worse year over year.
 
modern technologies like GPS, pod drives and chartplotters have made it easier for the average joe to get out on the water with less experience.

The result is more of a lower common denominator.

Those of us who have LEARNED something in seamanship generally act respectful of others and the waterway resource we all share.

Although no longer boating, I think you have a good point there. Never thought about it that way.
 
If he was approaching from your stbd he was stand on, no such thing as right of way, I don't think the navigating in a channel rule applies to us, only ships though it doesn't say. Now we can have the lawyers chime in. Of course he is an a$$ but south bay watermen have a long tradition of being outlaws.
 
Common courtesy Isn't so common anymore.

There is a total lack of courtesy these days. I was heading to hemlock this weekend and getting to the point where you need to slow down and due 5mph (end of the Lindenhurst Cut) before you dump into the state channel. I had a whole bunch of smaller boats that slowed down a few hundred yards before you had to, so rather than over take them, I too slowed down. Then some freaking moron in a 40 plus Searay over takes me, cuts in front of me and almost became a hood ornament.
 
Weekends can be tough out there. Sunday always seems to be worse than Saturday, and holiday weekends are the worst by far. It usually gets much better later in the afternoon or early evening.
Too many people think that ability to pay is the only requirement they need to get out on the water.
I was out most of the day yesterday and it was pretty uneventful despite the great weather.
Was out last weekend too, and that was a different story. The 5 MPH zones apparently don't apply to some people, and it sometimes seems that the bigger the boat, the less they know about what they are doing.
I wish the local law enforcement officers would start enforcing excessive speed. They should also do something about the excessive wakes. If you won't, can't, or don't know how to get your boat up on plane, then you should have to abide by a no wake rule. I think that some of these boats are just getting way to big for the sometimes narrow, and often shallow waterways on the south shore. The north channel isn't usually too bad because the bay is so wide open up there, but the state boat channel can be a nightmare and should probably be 5mph from the Wantagh Pkwy to Captree during peak hours on weekends and holidays in season..
I'm a fan of licensing. You need a license to operate cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc.; why not boats? Too many violations, then license to operate the boat should be suspended or revoked. Operating without a license, boat should be confiscated, and you get to go see the judge.
 
That's pretty sad ....

I'm always caught off guard by someone coming out of the flats . U don't see em and don't expect em .

Hopefully with the new requirement for certification, maybe things will get better, Sandy storm helped a little...ha ha ha!

Hang on a second. Are you telling me one now needs a certificate to be Jewish? And I thought being a Roman Catholic was tough! :D
