I take ocean pkwy round trip every working day.
I'm so curious and been dying to ask.

There's a boat tied to the piling, been there for weeks. Same thing last year.

Is there someone living on board?
Is that someone's winter layup?

Does anyone know what that's about?

Thanks

Its an older boat. I believe the guy lives on the boat. If you get up close to it, youll see the boat is in rough shape. Has a little dinghy that I guess he uses to take to shore. Has a little gas genset on the swim platform...

Does that mean anyone can just tie up to a dock or piling and live on their boat?

I haven't been there since September, but if it is the same boat he has been there for a couple of years now.

Interesting. Wonder where he dumps his waste!

Like that matters in Zachs Bay :) I wouldn't let my dogs swim in that water!!!!

He seems to go away in the summer then back after labor day.
That's a cold commute with a dingy at times.

Had the same questions. Generator and waste.

First zachs is clean. We swam there for aquapalooza. Water was great.

My guess is he is a old fisher guy. Probably gets kicked out of the marina he summers in and well it's free rent in zachs. Must be a miserable life but to each his own. We had a guy who lived in ayc on his boat all year including winter. It's doable but man how do you keep it together. I would go nuts.

My best friends lived on one of those house barges in Seaford for 9 years. It wasn't bad at all and I'm guessing if a boat is large enough it has the same comforts as home. Of course they didn't need a generator as they were at a dock but it's certainly something doable. I'm wondering where this guy keeps a car once he goes to shore.

A boat that size is only going to have a port a potty. I doubt he has a vaccu flush or something like that. Next is a fridge, he probably has a cooler of sorts, OR he relies on fishing as his source of food. Ive NEVER actually seen the person aboard the boat before...

MAYBE HE IS THE LONG ISLAND SERIAL KILLER!!!!!

"The Natural Resources Defense Council  produced a five-star rating guide for 200 of the most popular beaches in the United States — based on indicators of beach water quality, monitoring frequency and public notification of contamination.

The poorest rating in New York State went to Zach’s Bay, at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh on Long Island. " -http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/29/report-finds-li-beach-is-states-most-polluted/

And lets not forget this one...

"More than 15 miles of ocean beach on Long Island, including Jones Beach and Robert Moses State Parks, were closed today when a mysterious wave of sewage, syringes, blood vials and infectious hospital waste washed ashore. " - http://www.nytimes.com/1988/07/07/n...re-closed-by-a-wave-of-sewage-and-debris.html

I wouldn't eat a crab out of Jones Beach if you paid me!!

Last post was a coy and paste from another site, just learning how to do that on the IPad

When my dad retired in the 80s he use to do. Volunteer work, one job was testing water on LI
I remember him telling me about how bad zachs bay was
For many years and may still be there were sewage pipes that passed under the bay that leaked

Also another interesting story about zachs bay was when they put these pipes in before they were done and the pipes were connected sharks use to come into the bay via these pipes
Anyone here remember that time period?

Jones beach dumps its waste outside Zachs , we had this conversation already .

If it is the same guy I'm thinking of, he has been there for the last few summers tied up to the same piling.

I think he is trying to get a jump on a good spot for the memorial day air show!

Yes there is an air show this coming season and the Blue Angels are back.

I gotta imagine the bay constable or cg has visited him. You would hope. There is not much else going on out there and when you see that. Makes me wonder if I had a house boat and floated it onto a island out there if anyone would bother me? Who owns those islands? I see homes on some like that little island east of east channel, I think it is called little fire island. I would love to own one of those islands!
