What Zincs would you use in the Hudson River Stony Point area?

Location might change the answer here. I'm in Jersey City, but might have voted differently if I were on Catskill Creek or up in Troy for instance. It's a big, beautiful river after all.

I've used zincs up in Kgn. on all of our boats. Fresh water. They usually lasted two years in the engines but the shafts and rudders usually went every year. I think alot of this depends on the local environment and the power situation at your dock.

Used to be magnesium was the choice for fresh water (never in salt or brackish) and zinc for salt water, but recently, according to an article I read, aluminum seems to be the better choice for anodes because it lasts longer, is more effective and can protect in all environments. It all has to do with how the aluminum alloys are formulated.

This is the reason I started this poll, that is what I had heard and wanted some other opinions.

Here is a chart showing which metals are more noble and which are more anodic.

Zinc is more anodic than Aluminum, Magnesium more than Zinc.

You can go too far with Zinc and Magnesium if you put too much on your boat.

Since Dave's boat in only in the water for 6-7 months, the worry about the zinc not lasting long enough is low. Zinc is cheaper than Aluminum and is used by all diesel makers, no one uses Aluminum as a engine anode that I know of.

Yes, you can use Aluminum anodes but zinc has been working for all of these years, why make a change when there is no need to IMHO.

Since you don't have the infamous disappearing Merc outdrives hanging off your transom you should be using zinc zincs. The use of other zinc materials is really targeted at outdrives.

BTW - IMO the poll is not valid since you don't clarify inboards vs outdrives.

OK the poll is not valid but I thank you for you input. I will continue to use Zinc zincs.
