http://www.1010wins.com/One-Killed--Four-Hurt-after-Boat-Capsizes-in-Hudso/2684959 We were up North in the vicinity last night, we didn't see anything...

I couldn't get the Audio part of the report. Do they say what caused the boat to capsize?

a 26 footer doesn't "capsize and throw people in the water". it takes on water and then rolls over...

Unless a large vessel like a barge passed by and threw off a large wake. Where this happened the river is not too wide.

The "Newburg" area is known for it's restaurants as well as some excessive drinking. I really hope I'm wrong but the first thought that popped into my mind when I saw this report was of some people I know with a 26' boat that have a tendency to go out, drink and then return home at high rates of speed.

I pray that I'm wrong but I have a bad feeling this is another case of alcohol, boating and speed creating a bad mixture.

There is far too little information to even speculate beyond the obvious questions if they were leaving the Newburg docks. Hopefully there is no foul play involved. At this point it looks like another night out on the water ending in tragedy.

Certainly it's sad and our hearts go out to them.

The police said the boat apparently ran aground, flipped over trapping all 5 under the boat. The text says all were thrown into the water but I would tend to believe the spoken word of the Putnam County sheriff who made his statement in the audio section.

I have to agree with rommer about the "Newburg connection".

According to what I read they hit the flats just south of Garrison, obviously, they didn't follow the channel and were on the western side of the river.

That meets the profile of a group from our club. I sure hope I'm wrong. I called and left a few messages, can't get in touch with anyone but that's not unusual. The only saving grace is 1) They know the river better than to run aground and 2) The person who owns the boat I have in mind is fairly responsible with the drinking.

John we had the same idea. Not like it was a race or anything but I hesitated because I did not want to spell it out. We've spent the night at the Front St. marina and throughout the night and into the morning, all sorts of traffic was there. People coming and going at all hours bouncing off boats and laughing.
From the looks of things they missed the marker and cut it too close?

I finally was able to get in touch with someone from the CYC. As far as the person answering the phone knew, it's nobody from our club. My number two suspect was there this morning but just left. Thank goodness.

Here is another shot of the site. Click on satellite to see an aerial shot.

Yes, and if you look closely (zoom in) you will see the GREEN marker off the port side of the northern most boat south of the point. As I recall it is very shallow behind the marker.

Having gone thru that area at night it is very easy to make the mistake and try to go straight through. Definitely hard to see.

An updated story: http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/July08/29/Boat_fatal-ID-29Jul08.htm

The four kids were about 25yrs old, all from Mahopac, NY out of a marina in Westchester. Based on proximity to Mahopac, I'm betting it was Half Moon Bay. The other choices would be verplank area or ossining area.

If this story is correct, the person stuck under the boat was the one that perished but he made the cell phone calls which saved his friends.

And they were good kids. What a sad ending to what seemed to be a great evening.

The L.E.s have come out and said that alcohol did not appear to be a factor. Thank goodness he was able to get help started with 911 thus saving his friends.

From this morning's NY Post:

>>They left the Hudson Valley Marina in Verplanck and first headed to an on-the-water restaurant in Newburgh, said marina owner Steve Winkelmann.
"They were kind of excited to get out there and use [th] finally," Winkelmann said.
But as they were heading back south in the pitch-black darkness, the craft hit shallow water and thick mud at around 11:30 p.m. about two miles north of the Bear Mountain Bridge.
John Downey, 25, was at the wheel of the 26-foot motorboat when, "in the darkness, and being unfamiliar with the channel route, they got off into an area that apparently has a lot of boats run aground," said Capt. William McNamara of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.
Downey tried to turn around, but apparently struck something and the boat capsized, he said.<<
