2007 Upper Chesapeake BoaterEd Rendezvous

I have to admit... I'm not an expert in area boat launches. I see one right across the river from us... I'll take a run over and see if it's public access. There's one in our community, but I never bought access to it.

I know of one down at Sandy Point State Part that would provide a nice 30 minute ride to the raft-up.

Just found out... the boat launch across the way is private...

Does anyone know of any other public boat launces in the area...?? I'll keep looking.

I thought there was a boat ramp at the marina right inside the bridge. I knew a guy that kept his boat there and I thought it had a ramp. I don't remember the name of the marina, however there is a little restaurant right at the upper edge of the road there.

Well, Erle's got it right- I'll be kayaking to this one, but NOT from Havre de Grace!
I really don't need an official launch ramp, just a bit of grass or beach with access to the water and a place to park my truck for the day. I'm OK with open water but would like to find someplace within 3 or 4 miles of our spot. Any ideas?

Thanks for the effort Steve...

FWIW- I removed 1 of my engines this weekend. Did it right at my slip. What a PITA. The replacement should arrive in about 10 days. I don't have a BOAT, it's now a BOALAFT (Break Out At Least Another Five Thousand). It was certainly the wrong year to install the new generator, that's for sure. I should've checked the ol' crystal ball before diving into that project 4 months ago.

OH... if you're kayaking in, just come to our place. Vic will be parking his camper in our driveway for the weekend.

We'll be dinghy'ing in to the house anyway to take care of the dog.

I'll send you a PM with the address... Mapquest will bring you right in.

If you're intent on getting some paddle time, Dusty's talking about Stoney Creek Bridge Marina. I didn't realize they had a public boat launch there. They're about 1.7 miles from where we'll be throwing anchor.

Either way, you're welcome to drop the kayak off of our pier.

The marina just inside the bridge is Stony Creek Bridge Marina. They do have a ramp, but don't know if they allow public use. Their number is (410) 255-5566.

There is a free public boat ramp at Harbor Hospital. Harbor Hospital is about 10 miles up the Patapsco River just to the west of Fort McHenry.

Sandy Point State Park is about 14 miles to the south and has great boat ramps. They charge $5 per person for park access but do not charge for use of the boat ramps.

Before hurricane Isabel there was a free public ramp at Fort Armistead Park (at the west end of the Key Bridge). It was severely damaged in the hurricane, has never been repaired and is no longer usable.

Here is the Google earth view of the raft-up site. I plan to be there and may be bring some young marines.

Who is confirmed for the weekend?

I'll be there for the day Saturday. I'll be coming by land from New Jersey to hook up with "youse guys." I'll be parking my RV nearby and have been promised a water taxi service to bring me out to the gathering. I received an e-mail this morning that the BoaterEd Mascot, Bos'un the stuffed moose, is in the able hands of UPS and is already on his way to my house. They've promised delivery by Friday at the latest. So I'll be bringing him with me, for everyone to meet. I've personally met a couple of you in person, and am anxious to meet as many more of you as I can.

We're still planning on coming at this point. I'm going to try and drag a few boats along from Rock Creek if I can.

We'll be there in the early afternoon - 38' Formula, 2 adults, some "refreshments". Not sure of our overnight plans...

We are heading to Fairlee on Thursday and will be coming down on Saturday around noon, best guess. 2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 toddlers, 2 Jack Russel, a turtle [:-banghead] and some toys ...

We might have an agreement on Thurs. for the boat, so it is unlikely we will boat, however have not excluded the drive up there for a visit sat afternoon. Can someone offer me a cell # to call for a lift to the raft-up.
Thanks if possible.

Just go to SYork's back yard and hit us with bottles of rum. Or beer. Or wine. Or....

That will work for us. Steve could you also PM me your address, and I'll find it if things work out for us.

I'm out.
I injured my back at work yesterday and can barely move, so kayaking is out. It sounds like the weather will be about perfect (just like last year) so enjoy yourselves.

Rob

Ouch! First MikeeH, now you. The grizzled veterans are falling by the wayside! Looks like 6 to 8 boats?

One of these years, the admiral and I might be able to make it to the raft-up. Last summer, the admiral had surgery.
This year, I had surgery in May, but am still dealing with a few complications.
I've gotten out a few times on the boat this summer, but have to pick my "good days" when I'm feeling up to it.

If you do another raft-up in late September or early October, there's a good chance we'll make it.
Late September through October has the area's best boating weather (barring any brushes by hurricanes).

You all have fun.

We'll try to make it next time.

Glen, thanks for the kind wishes. Wish you could have made it.

Dominic, never mind the Jack Russells; Jack Daniel's would be better appreciated! (Just kidding, of course).

Midnight has just passed. We've all had a great time. Vic just grabbed a dingy ride back into shore. The rest of us have decided we're too old to stay up any longer. Old friends have met again, new friendships have been made. It's been a good time for all!

A special thanks to Steve & Carolyn for "hosting" this year's edition of the NCBBERU. Thanks also to all those who came from outside Stoney Creek and endured the morning's windy slop. We had a great time, but were sad that we had to leave so early (10:15 AM!!) on Sunday to meet other commitments. Saturday was definitely a gorgeous day and a lot of fun. If someone has a hosting site, let me know - we've got a couple dozen pictures.
