looking for more places to anchor out on the river two of my favorites are croton (north side) & if its rough bow line hole nice and protected but, not much of a view. besides the three creeks up river anyone want to share some more spots on the hudson from top to bottom ? thank you in advance ........john

There is a little cove just past Cold Spring (east side) that I often see loaded up with anchored boats. A lot of people also anchor south of the Bear Mtn Bridge on the west side.

John, If I remember right they call it Little Stony Point....

The view of the Tappan Zee at night from South Croton is nice. If the winds are bad on the north side the south side is usually flat.

Butch is right "LITTLE STONY POINT" is what it's called, but, a word of caution if you plan to head in tward the beach there on the chart it shows a little hook of land on the north end that seems to be connected to land , it's not , it is an old breakwater or something and covers at high tide & uncovers at low tide so be cautious of it. to get to the beach line up in the middle between that & the rocks above the road ( north side) on the chart you"ll be fine there's plenty of room.thanks for the replys guys . a few more decent anchorages in the area are; 1 just south of hook mountain & 2 , above the tappan zee bridge north side on the west bank just watch your depth as you head tward shore and don't forget about the tde . always looking for decent spots to set the hook. i like it above stony point on the west shore but something about the nuke plant freaks me out so i rarly hang out there too long. thanks again guys keep-em comming especially north and south of rockland county............ john

Oh the nuke plant won't hurt you - I only throw up 4 times a day, its really not that bad [:-mischievous] ...

South of Rockland the only place I know of would be the Piermont area - but it can get very shallow in there. Further north, there are so many good places once you get past Poughkeepsie. For example, in the vicinity of Norrie Park, either near Esopus Island or on the north side of the park near the Mills mansion. Or you can run up the eastern side of the Mid Hudson Bridge (if you dare) because there's plenty of water there if you know where you're going and follow the chart, and most of the boats will be crowded into the narrow channel on the western side of the River. You can anchor near Athens, north of Catskill on the western side, or Gay's point (eastern side), or Schodack Creek (eastern side - which is now part of a state park I think, but it has no facilities). And of course the three big creeks previously mentioned. I think the one creek everybody forgets about is Saugerties (Esopus), because the facilities are lousy, but once you get inside it looks like a beautiful anchorage area there, and you can explore up to a neat waterfall with your dink...

Just this morning, I read the final result of Pete's anchoring at Esopus Island off Norrie Point...LOL! Glad to read the gel coat repairs all worked out.

Thanks Pete, I will have to check thoes out this year.Ijust joined this site a few days ago & still catching up on old posts but i think i read your in roundout somewhere ( favorite spot of mine ), if so i have a question for ya. past the second bridge in , the one that looks like a mini George Washington bridge thier are morrings on the south side ( do you know anything about them ? )can they be rented for a night ? Who you contact ? when i go there i usually grab one for a few hours and hang out , then venture in the creek to anchor for the night or stop at the marina near the end on the north side ( forget the name ) but it's a nice place to hang out , have a few drinks , nice people too . Another anchor spot that has nice views of storm king and surronding mtns., is on the south side of Pollepel island, ( also called bannermans ) in newburgh bay.follow the east side bank from the south side and head north the channels deep even past the castle for a bit , use a chart because there are ruins between the castle & the shore but just south of the island your fine but remember to start about 1 mile south of the island to avoid the shoal water ( claerly marked on chart ) i've even seen large sailboats there. thanks again all , keep em commin.........john

LOL, Chris! I was waiting to post that until the link to Boating on the Hudson came up, and you beat me to it!!!

John, regarding the Rondout and those moorings, I'm not sure who owns them. I would imagine the Rondout Yacht Basin does. Perhaps Boatbum Dan can answer this for you since he docks nearby. My marina is the Anchorage, which is about 2 miles further in...

I believe those are private as are the ones across from the marina Rondout Bay (Pete's favorite hang ;)), which is not to be confused with the marina Rondout Yacht Basin.

Thanks guys , look forward to rounout ths year mabey see you there? I talked to a guy nammed Jeff at the marina west of thoes morrings and he didn't know either, i think thats the marina you were talking about , they have a little hut above the gas dock that sells breakfast & we usually stop in the morning on the way out . i sort of had a feeling they were private & who knows what kind of condition the morings are in , but a few are always empty ,still currious about them , mabey the condos above them have something to do with it . Ithink i'll stay away from the nuke plant also ( boat still glows in the dark a little at night LOL ) BTW when do they do that christmas parade thing i saw it once and it was funny & fun to watch i guessed it had to do with the snowbirds who won't be up north for christmas....................john f .

Well, Rondout Bay WOULD be my favorite hangout were I not married with children, as they have had wet T shirt contests there in the past...

Then again Lord knows who was wearing those T shirts [-crzwom] !!!

The spot just north of Cold Spring is very nice...but, I have moored there twice and both times I witnessed boaters cutting their anchor rodes because they would not release from the bottom...that being said, I had no problem myself. My favorite anchorage, and I am sure my dock mates will attest to this, is slip C25 at PBM.

Yea i believe that, the usual hudson clay mud can can be pretty sticky to say the least . when that happens to me i just snug the anchor rode tight to the bow cleat right above the anchor and let the wakes do the work for me , hopefully on a fllod tide doesn't hurt either. Pete i never really paid any attention to the faces in thoes type of contests , like to know when that goes on always seemed like a family place to me, but then again , the kids have to go to bed sometime LOL.............JOHN F

Greetings from up north.

We anchor out in what Pete refered to as Schodack Creek quite a bit. We call it "The Hook" it is a great spot. Like a completely different world except for the occasional passing train. Lots of room and there are usually quite a few other boats in there. Sometimes we raft up quite a few. No ammenities or anything like that to speak of, but we like it like that.

Behind Middle Grounds Flats, across from Athens is nice too. Short term docking at Athens (no over nights), a few places to eat and a Stewart's shop within walking distance.

Good to hear from you up north KD , never been in there, but always check it out on the chart . now you and Pete got me thinking about it more so i will have to check it out this year no amenities sounds fine to me also looks like another world on the chart just like you said ( cool) how far in there do you guys go ? past little Schodack island ? it looks like the deep water stops about there ? whats the bottom like , rocky , muddy , ? thanks for all the local knoweledge you can give . if this thread keeps contiuing i will compile a list with all the local knoweledge included from everyone( stuff charts can't tell you as good as expeirence ) and post it for everyone if we get enough spots & everyone thinks it's a good idea . thanks again .......john f

Is that the incident that prompted the steel-toed boat shoes?

I hear they're making steel-toed crocs as well.
