It's time for us to be in the Bahamas again for Winter. I have to say, they took some heat from Sandy, but it really doesn't compare to some of the carnage we've heard about.
Anyway, things are open here and they are all working through the issues. West End was happy to have us and customs was ready for us on a Sunday. Yeah, fuel is expensive. We paid 750 bucks to fill Freedom today.
But from what we have seen so far, Elbow Cay and Green Turtle came through Sandy well enough. Yes some places have some water to clean up after, but in spite of the high water at the Green Turtle Club, they had power and water at the dock! It turns out they installed some new power towers that are modular. When the weather threatens, they can remove them and cap the bases! After the storm they re install the towers and move on.
The Hope Town Marin looks great and the progress is incredible here. Good food and docking with a shuttle over to Hope Town proper.

Lucky you. Wish is was eating Conch Chowder at Green Turtle right now.

It was an insult. At this point I think we put in 112 gallons. A very ugly price.

Explorer Charts shows OBB at $5.47 a gal for diesel.

We topped off at OBB before coming around to the Abacos since it's always much cheaper there. It was 5.46.9, with no extra charge for using a credit card. And since they take Discover, we won't have a foreign transaction fee. The 750 includes a credit card fee added at the fuel dock, and we'll be hit with an additional 3% when our Visa bill comes in.

Edit: The price of diesel went to 5.92/gallon if you pay with a card. Gonna sit tight now!

Damn, the Keys look darn good at this point!

(although, crossing only costs me under 20 gallons :-)

No worries. It will only last a couple years. China is fixing to spend about $40b on oil refineries. Importing oil from Canada, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia. And they are building one of the largest refineries in SA. Soon they will be importing all the gas and diesel we can buy. Probably at half the price we pay now. They aren't stupid. They understand that the life cycle of the internal combustion engine is at the end of its cycle. 50-75 years tops. Unlike us though they have a plan to exploit the oil extracting and selling as much of it as they can get their hands on over the next 50 years. If course we will still have hundreds of billions of barrels in the ground when it is no longer needed.

If the fuel is economical people will be using those engines a very long time.
