Block Island Trip

They are Bob's kids. He doesn't believe in PFD's....

(That picture is not one that I took, found it via a google search. Some pool/spa store image. My youngest is about to turn 23 so i guess that makes me... well.... just OLD!)

I have a 46 foot 2005 Meridian 411 and I boat Northern Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. In the last three years I have learned NOAA weather forecasting is not very exact and it sure does not cover the conditions you will run into on a average day. On 1-2 foot forecasts i have seen 6 footers many times and on 3-4 I have sen 6-10 and these are not rollers, they are waves you fall off of even with a 46 foot by 14-4 boat. Your boat can go 18 or 20 miles no problem, but if the waves are breaking over your bow and you can only get 10 mph or so you will have a very bad day. Last year we decided to take my brothers 19 foot Sea Ray center console to the launch ramp on a day with 2 footers. Turned into a 9 mile trip in up to 6 footers with every wave breaking over bow. This was a self bailing boat or we would have sunk. Boat was on a lift and once off lift we could not go back, big mistake, i was hit in the face with breaking waves every 10 seconds for a hour and a half in 55 degree water. Not fun, your boat could be the same, and i bet you are not self bailing, if not you are going down.

Bob sure has a large following here. He posted on the ladies forum from which I can tell has about 20 or so active members. Bob got 5 responses and 5498 views. Like him or not, we all seem to love Bob!

We have discussed this before...we are certain it is Bob checking every ten seconds to see if some of the fairer sex will fall for his lines. Seems women are smarter!
 
Well, not to support Bob, but because of his post, I got a lot of great information about going to BI. I have never been there before, but am planning to head there this summer. I have a 38' Regal, so the boat should be able to handle it. But any additional advice for someone with this type of advice. IE, where is the best place to get up to date weather reports, before heading out? and any other advice is welcome.

Don't mean to hijack the Bob bashing, but from my perspective, it's an honest question.

I do not know if this was suggested before (as I have not read every post here), but it seems to me that a very obvious alternitive for bob's question would be to keep the bowrider on the trailer and ferry it over. Bob could get his camp site and launch his boat daily for local use. BTW, I've crossed Block island sound a few times on the ferry and man were there some big rollers out there!

Am gonna go with my 28-footer, but I'll leave a loooooong rope tied to shore so I can be pulled in if needed.

How much is like 25 miles of rope?
 
Naw, your boat does not need that, just bring the two infants pictured above. They will save ya!

You should have no problems going there with your boat, just keep a weather eye out, and time the tides if you want to keep momma happy with minimal "bouncing".

Rope is a rope and becomes a line when attached to your boat. And Ink for the bonus question , what is the bitter end ?

BTW, Trueblue, a Block Island gathering is a nice idea, although for most of us it's a long trip so may be hard to coordinate a date. I'm planning to get out there at some point this summer, probably in August.

Ink, your hear hear to John C, was a bit condescending. He has a great deal of knowledge to offer. And over the last few years on this forum I took note.

Take a step back….. You seem to be a newbie at boating based on your posts, which is not a bad thing. John C may be correct, but everyone else who is poking fun or being sarcastic to Bob is also within their own rights. From the start this thread went down hill. The thought of Bobs plans has daunted me. The reply’s are varied, some good and some BS. But the bottom line is Bob needs to really rethink his plans.

I am booked for Block Island 7/13-7/16 heading to Essex next.
 
i like montauk. Waves can get real nasty in that part of long island. I use to go to Amagansette every summer to the private beach and chill.

So i can imagine the waters once u're more indepth.
 
All of these ROs and no one sees the obvious answer to Bobs question. The ferry service will be happy to ferry Bobs boat and tow vehicle to BI. He'll probably need reservations,But He will be able to boast that he took his "teacup" to BI. BOB be carefull when you head to the ferry, The fog can roll in on you and you may miss the exit.
