Block Island

I'll throw my oar in on this one. July 20 would be fine. We have radar and have found it useful in BI Sound. We come from Norwich, CT, so we go east in Fishers Island Sound and come out at Nappatree and across the sound to BI. We usually dock at Paynes, which we find fun.

If we can help anyone make this trip, just let us know at wml**largeandpage.com. We'd be glad to help.

For what it is worth, we are booked in the Block Island Boat Basin for the last week in August (just prior to Labor Day). We'll be in Montauk Labor Day weekend.

We are also considering a shorter trip in July if we can get the kids to go.

We boat from Glen Cove and head directly through the Sound, thru the Race and across Block Island Sound.

We make this trip once or twice a season, so if we can help, let us know too.

It's a great trip and a great place.

CtCruiser and everyone else
We moved to a new dock this year and it has been sooo much better. The people on the dock are going to Block on July 14th for the week. If you would like to move the date to then that would be good for us. We are going to be travling for work in July and August and making several trips with this group this summer. If not we may be able to put something else together. We will be staying on the hook in the pond I believe. Two in our group have slip reservations and I think so far there are another 3 or 4 boats in our group.

Any and all weekends are good for us. We normally let the weather dictate where we go. Block is only a skip across the sound, a :45 minute ride. We always anchor off of Breezy point in the pond

Hoping to go to Block early this Sat morning with the family. Also hoping we can grab a mooring if we get there by 9am. If not we'll anchor.

Tom or anyone, where is Breezy Point? I don't see it labled on my charts of the pond.

I will try to explain. If you know where Dinghy beach is just follow around the shore counter clockwise. Its about a 1/2 mile away. There is a point that juts out about 50 yds from the rest of the shore. That is Breezy point. It is good to know the names of the locations for the launch drivers to bring you home if you did not take the tender due to snotty waves.

Tom,

Thanks, I will take a look. Did not make it to Block this weekend. Almost but not quite. You can read my tale of woe in the engine forum under "Engine Gurus..."

Maybe next time.

Went on Friday and the ride sucked. 3-5 and all kinds of wind. Windy all weekend untill late on Sunday afternoon. Fog banks were running in and out for hours on Sunday. Left this morning Block Island Sound wasprobably 3-5 all rollers. All in all not a bad time, just wish the boat was bigger. Would have made the trip better.

Can I semi-hijack this? i'm scheduled to go to block mid-week in august. Boat Basin is booked. Payne's says no reservation just show up? I don't want Chaplins given the rafting and seemingly tight quarters. anyone have experience with Paynes-- any problems? do they 'usually' raft up at payne's and do you think they would mid-week?

J...

We only stay at Paynes. I always try to call (they don't answer on the VHF) the night before and then when I am coming into New Harbor. On one occasion, they did raft another of the same model boat to me, which was fine, but that was on a weekend. most likely, mid week you will not be rafted. Keep in mind, all docks are fixed, with the exception of behind the kitchen (big donut fan), and one dock near the road. The bar, Mahogany Shoals, gets a little noisy on weekends, but can be fun. Paynes is closer to town and the beach than either Basin or Champlins. give it a try, Cliff and Sands are very accomodating, and however crowded they are, if they wave you in, they will make you fit.

We are headed out to Block this weekend. Leaving RI on Saturday (8/04/07) afternoon staying for the week off of breezy point on the hook. If anybody is out that way, stop by and say hi. Burgundy canvases on a 36' Regal.

I've been to BI so many times, but this will be the first time that I'm actually solo-sailing there, departing Newport this coming Sunday morning (8/05/07). Should be a nice sail with predicted 2 foot seas and 10-15 kt winds out of the NW. Wife's taking the ferry to meet up with me sometime later - due to other obligations.

Don't know yet where I will end up - perhaps some moorings will free up from departing boaters - otherwise, I'll drop anchor.

I'll be on the lookout for "Barefoot Dreaming" off Breezy Point.

Steve-

I predict it will be a calming experience. I have brought my boat alone back from Portsmouth to Westerly a few times. I like having my wife to stand watch, but I have to say it is nice to go solo once in a while.

Dan

Dan,
I'm actually looking forward to this, since my wife starts to freak with too much sail up and whenever I attempt to push the limits of the rig. Once leaving the slip, It will be just me, the sea and my own limitations for 30 nautical miles. A relatively short run which I will try to sail - without power. As you said, a hopefully calming experience.

I just found out that the Tri-State Tuna tourney is this Monday, Tuesday and I think wed at the BI Boat Basin. Cool, here fishy fishy.....

Opinions, please! If one were to arrive in New Harbor this Thursday around 10:00 a.m. what would you guess the likelihood would be of obtaining a mooring?

Thanks!

We were there July 9 - 13, there were empty moorings the entire time we were there.

Don't need no stinking radar to get to block.

What would you do if your radar failed 1/2 way there?

Its a straight line 60 mile shot to block. Follow your compass all the way there and back.

I like my Garmin Chartplotter but have done it "compass only" for all the years before it was invented.

There is safety in numbers unless you all don't know where your going!!!
