Carver Pin Striping

Bob...makes sense. I'll go for the re-stripe. Any idea where there are are stripes close to the original? The blog seems to indicate that there are dealers out there that still have access, but, I have not found any.

Thanks!

You're going to have to go to a local sign or name company. Carver hasn't offered that striping for 15 to 18 years now. Anything someone may have in stock is probably no good any more. I got mine online...it was 3 separate stripes but the color match was pretty good. I did the entire boot stripe and was able to keep is straight...I'm kind of good with that sort of thing.

Thanks, Kenny. I'm not very good at opposable thumb stuff, but, I'll trying striping it. I found a Carver stripe at Great Lakes Skipper that could work for the upper stripe. I would first use a simple 1/2 in black line to transition between the gelcoat colors. Then, about 1 1/2 inches down, the shadow starts and this one looks to be about the right width. I'm concerned, though, how old this stuff is. Think I should try or go with new stuff?

Doug,

First, the striping in the pics at the link are from a Maxum runabout...they will work on your boat, but aren't Carver striping. I think I would try looking online at striping outlets and get the correct width striping at least, and a close color. Since you're doing the whole thing, it doesn't really have to match

Hi Doug, I have a complete roll of charcoal/silver w/2 burgundy combined that was for our 89 Regal. I also have a roll of 2" burgundy I purchased for our Regal but never used.. I'd believe both rolls to be good... but you're welcome to take a look/see if they'll work on your boat?? Kenny knows me and the Regal/Carver colors.. if you want to email me that would be fine and I can send you a couple pics tonight if you want take a look?? shadow7118 and it's an aol email...

Doug, I see your boat is a 3257 Carver...

I'll need to check, but but both rolls of boot stripe I mentioned I think are ~50'.Was not a problem on our Regal.. as the boot strip only ran to the chine.. I'm thinking it runs the entire length on your Carver & may be a bit too short.. I'll pull it tonight and check if you still have an interest.

I don't think 50' will be enough Joe. The Carver stripe does run the entire length of the boat, which is probably about 28 to 29 feet where the stripe is (each side)

yea, I'll have to check tonight Kenny.. I don't recall the length.. (CRS) as it's been a while since I looked at it. I think it's only 50' tho..

Joe & Sheryl - it was sounding pretty good...until the 50' part. :) The stripe definitely go the enitre length of the boat and even cross the stern. Thanks for the idea, though.

Doug,
Here are a few other companies. I have use two, Pro stripe for my 85 Chris, and 32 Carver. I then used stripeman for my Trojan. Top quality 3mm vinyl that will last. It is designed for the marine industry. They both come with clear vinyl over the color to allow you to smooth out any air bubbles. When done, simple peel off the clear. If you encounter any large air bubbles that you cannot smooth out use a pin to get the air out then smooth carefully using a bondo spreader. One last point on bubbles, don't be disappointed if you have small bubbles after you lay it out, the heat of the sun will remove them. Just make sure you use Alcohol type cleaner on the hull prior to installing and always install the stripes in the shade and when the hull is cool. Never in direct sunlight or when it is hot. If done on a hot surface it will stick instantly and you can not remove it to straighten it out if needed. Make sure you post pics.

Thanks, Guys - Another question on striping. My 3257 is an '89. I thought the color was Burgundy but now that I have removed some oxidation (and gelcoat) it looks almost red. Question...should I get something like a Burgundy or try and find dark red? Here is what it is starting to look like...haven't polished it, yet.

Thanks,

Doug

Hey, Guys - Well, I'm about to order some premium 2 mil vinyl striping. I'm matching the widths of the originals (shadows are there) but I am chaning up the colors a little. I was thinking the top stripe (seperating the two colors of gelcoat - 1/2 inch) would be Black. The next stripe down (about 3/4 below that) would be Grey - Dark and would be a solid 3/4 inch and not the multi-stripe as origninal. Finally, the boot stripe would be Burgundy/Dark Red, whichever matches better and would be one solid stripe at 3 7/8 inches. I have attached a boat pick and the colors I've thought about. Can I get some thoughts? I actually considered using the Grey/Silver for the top line and the Black as an accent. Thoughts?

I would do a single dark grey stripe at the line where the red meets the white on the upper part and do just as you said for the boot stripe.

I ordered the stripes for the boat. I used a single, 2" charcoal grey stripe for the transiition from the red/burgundy to the white. It replaced the previous two-lines and their shadows. I used a single 3.5" black line for the boot stripe and a 1/2" burgundy line for accent for the boot (and elsewhere, as needed.) I'll be installing next week and will follow up with pictures for the finial product.

Well, I have gotten the striping done. It was much harder than I thought...my fine motor skills have not evolved beyond most primates. Anyway, I went with a thicker dark-gray stripe for the accent line between the two colors of gelcoat (1.5") and then a 3"black stripe for the boot. I still have a burgundy-red 1/2" stripe that I may or may-not use. Free-handing an acccent stripe near the others may be more than I can successfully do! Anyway, this should close out my updates for this subject. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

The boat looks fantastic Doug. You may have a future in boat restoration! :-)

Thanks, Kenny! I drop it in the water next week...then I can work above the rub rail. It was a little too high on blocks to work my buffer, but, I did wet sand a good bit of the upper area. I'll start hitting it at the dock. Quick question, though. Do you know of the radar arch is fiberglass or aluminum on the 3257?

On the 3257, it is fiberglass, so you can work it like the rest of the boat
