couldn't believe there were open slips all weekend. Couldn't believe they were actually turning people away. Can't believe it's $30 just to park your vehicle if you can't buy a pass. Heard rumors that rule of "if you come this weekend don't come next weekend" is in effect? What gives here??? Almost turning into the land of no......

When I went for my docking permit(what a joke) they said this year they will be enforcing the non-resident rule. Like anything else give it time and they will forget their own rules and it will be business as usual.

Some policies work like the two weekend rule. The Town of Babylon doesn't have that many slips so they need to try to give everyone a shot at a slip. The rules need to be updated. One example is the non resident rule, if slips are available it should then be first come first served. I remember pulling into Atlantique and was told if a resident pulls in you have to give up your slip. It should be residents first but if slips are open then anybody who can pay and live by the rules. The rule enforcement in the marinas all along F.I. seem to be who you know anyway.

Being a resident of the Town of Babylon, I would rather see empty slips then rented to non-residents. It's not about making money, it's about I pay TOB taxes and I want the slips available. This also increases the value of my home in a roundabout way. If you want to stay at Cedar, buy a house in TOB.

Do you have any idea the cost of running and maintaining a marina? I think not or you would not have made this post.
If these marinas were all full they would still lose money. Being empty makes it more so. Now tell me how your high taxes are helping the value of your property when most home buyers are not boaters and could care less about that marina.
I do agree that there should be reasonable rules to ensure the slips turn over. I disagree with rules that force someone already in a slip out because a town resident decided to show up.
I can not speak for Town of Babylon marina's but I know the Town of Islip makes money with Atlantique. That was the main reason they pushed to get the marina open in time. I keep very involved with my local commissioners and representatives. They want that revenue to make up for losses elsewhere.

Well if town residents want a slip they should get there in the morning not 2 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday expecting someone to magically standing there to greet them. The town sells 1000 docking permits but only has about 300 slips so if 1/3 of the dock permit holders come out the slips are full. This is a matter of reality the town needs to generate enough revenue to cover costs and the only two ways to do it are rent slips or raise my taxes some more. I say rent the slips offering them to town residents first then any one who will pay the fee and live by the town rules. I believe in running the town more like a business. This is my opinion of course.

Personally, I don't care as I will not take a slip where I may be told to leave. However, since boating residents in the TOB are a very small percentage of the total number of residents, it is in the town's best interests to keep the cost as low as possible and that means maximizing occupancy.

As a person who owns 2 slips in TOB and pays taxes there but I am denied a slip at cedar because my car and or boat is not registered in Babylon.

Atlantique makes money in and of itself. The town pays no property taxes on the property, they pay LIPA a pre negotiated price for electric and the labor costs are minimal. The dockmaster actually lives in a town owned property further lowering cost to the town. The town gets a fee from F.I. ferries and a percentage from the concession. Atlantique actually mitigates costs for other town operations.
I don't want to get in a pissing match but I lived in another town and wasn't very happy with my boating options. I grew up going to Atlantique. Its one of the reasons we bought in Islip Town. Town parks, Marina’s and spray parks are not money making entities for the town. They are amenities offered to resident that pay taxes. It should not be run like a business because it will never be profitable.
You asked how does it add value to my home ? If you can’t get in Cedar because you’re not a resident, you might tend to buy your next house in TOB. Making demand for TOB houses go up. This is what great parks and Marina’s do for a town.

Doug see what you started!LOL listen the point here is we all want to get a slip somewhere at sometime. I think we can all agree that the rules need to be reviewed because they're not working or making sense. I don't think people will be buying in the TOB just so they can get a Docking Permit(stupid idea)anytime soon. I rarely go to Gilgo or Cedar but I can usually get in if I want because I get there early. Current Sea I agree that if your paying property tax to the TOB you should be able to get a stupid docking permit so you can go and pay a slip rental fee. Happy Boating to all I say.

Spoke to town attorney.
Threatened to sue based on the fact there is a line on my tax bill for parks tax.
So I pay for the parks.
Only way around it is to register boat at AYC.

I think there's no real right answer outside of adding more slips. On one hand, there were available slips over the weekend, on the other, people who wanted to use those slips would have been turned away. The fact that I'm TOB, pay tax there, paid for permit then have to pay for parking and slip fees made me a little ill....then all of the talk of if you're here this weekend, don't come back next weekend. To fuel the fire a little, they also were making people wait to leave by checking plates and what-not.....
