I think I know the answer already, but I'll throw it out there anyway:

Any chance of anchoring out during the festival and taking the dinghy to shore for this event? I'd have tickets already...

The police have been busting chops regarding people coming ashore from boats the last couple of years.
 
That's what I thought. It's too bad that a festival that is supposed to celebrate the river, cuts off riverfront access.
 
Their idea of water front access does not include any water craft you can't carry. Really a shame. I'm sure they could make a fair sum of money by catering to the large numbers of boats the go there every weekend.
 
Here is copy of an email that I just sent to Steve Lurie (steverb2@gr5tclearwater.org), the Festival Director:

Mr. Lurie,

First, I wish you and the festival the greatest of success. The work that Clearwater has done, and continues to do, is important and valued. As a boat owner that enjoys the river several times a week from early spring to late fall, I can attest to the improvements that I have seen over the years to the water quality, and river access that your organization has been so deeply involved in.

I would like very much to be able to anchor my boat off Croton Point, like many boaters do every week-end, and then take my dingy into shore to attend the festival. However, I have been told by many of my fellow boaters that that is not possible, because the park police do not allow it.

I find it very frustrating that I can not arrive at the festival that celebrates the river, from the river. As one of the most influential voices on the riverfront, I hope that your organization will ask the Westchester County Parks department to reconsider it's policy, at least for the festival week-end. It is a shame that Croton Point Park is so boater unfriendly. Between the restricted zone off shore, to the abusive police it seems that they really hate boaters.

They should put in a dinghy dock and try to encourage people to come ashore and enjoy the beautiful facilities.
 
I'm not sure what the tickets to this events cost but it is my understanding they cannot charge access to the park. The fee you pay when driving is supposedly for parking only. Considering this, in theory, they should allow us to dinghy in, especially if not leaving the dink on shore.

However, we all know what is right and what the police have been told to enforce can be very different.

I agree 100%.. In a time when most gov Dept's. are seeing economic troubles you would think that in a situation like this someone could be a little creative and find ways to generate income.

Put in a dingy dock, charge a small fee to come ashore and walk your dog, use the playground or BBQ's, etc...

Another thought for income would be for the County of Westchester to invest in a Pump out boat and charge a small fee to pump out boats that go there for the weekend, day, etc...
 
Don't get me started on the pump-out boat...
 
You will never re-coup the cost of a pump out boat so forget it as a money maker.

Not enough money in boat poop!
 
I have never been charged to use a pump out boat and I have used many while traveling in fact just two weeks ago. Just tip the driver a well earn tip and that's all. I don't see this as a money maker just a service to help keep the waterways clean.
 
Their are privately run pump-out boats that charge for the service, just as there are marinas that charge for the service.
 
Up and down the sound in both LI and CT many if not most harbors have town funded pump out boats that do not charge for the service. In some town including Essex on the CT river they give you a flag to put out when you need a pump out, you don't even have to be there if they see the flag they pump you out. I wish we had service like this on the Hudson. The problem with changing is there will always be people who will dump because they are either to lazy or to cheap to pay the price.
As for the original thread that is a great letter please update us ASAP.

Haverstraw charges $5 if you don't buy fuel, Rondout YB charges $20, there is a private pump-out boat in Montauk that charges.
 
When we were in Oyster Bay for the weekend the town had a free pump out boat. The man who ran it was saying that he has thought of buying one and using it in the Hudson River since we do not have one. He was thinking that for a flat fee he would make the rounds during the week. I think it would be a great idea based upon what the fee would be. It is getting harder to find a working pump out, and if you do not need fuel forget about it. What does everyone think would be a fair fee for this service? $250 + or - for the season??
 
I guess I'm just lucky every time I need to pump out I'm someplace that does it for free.
Essex, North port, Block Island, Oyster Bay I can't recall ever paying. That said I would not be opposed to paying even in my home port if they came to my dock like they do elsewhere.
Hogan one nice thing about the Trojan is the size of the holding tanks I rarely need to pump out.
