Container Ship hits Bay Bridge

The local Pilot is an adviser, the Master will take the rap.

Ouch. I wonder where repairs to the ship will be done?

Pelosi is out here demanding the USCG be investigated for their slow response time! Give me a break!!!! They are the experts here; she just loves to stir things up to get attention. When will she ever go away?????

Liz,
I agree, both Newsom and Pelosi both blowing air.

I heard today that one of the CG personnel was relieved of his duties and has been "reassigned". Thank you Pelosi. That really makes for great morale with in the CG! Go away, Pelosi!!!!!

Partly true. Capt. What's-His=Name was relieved of reposibility for clean=up bu remains as CG District commander. -- Warren P.S. to Flutter == A speedy recovery and a speedier return to the river. The foothills are great, but the Delta is greater!

Thanks, x! It is a shame I'm missing one of the loveliest times of the year on the delta, but there will be many more!

From what I've been hearing and reading it sounds like the Coasties didn't act properly and thought the spill was smaller than it actually was. IF that is indeed the case then those who were responsible for getting the word out and keeping the spill in check failed and caused it to be worse than it could have been.

Since the Bay is really such a delicate Ecosystem there should have been an all out over reaction to the spill. IF that were the case the press would have been saying they reacted more aggressively than needed, but they wouldn't have been saying haw bad and extensive it was.

In My opinion someone really F'ed up and it sounds like it was the fault of the Coasties for not being as aggressive as they should have been so Pelosi and Newsom I feel were right to criticize and cause a shake-up.

My brother joined Bird Rescue that was formed after the '71 oil spill/tanker collision. He's participated in some 10 oil spill bird rescues. He says after each spill, great contingency plans are worked up and everybody is happy how prepared they will be...BUT, After EVERY spill, EVERYONE falls flat on their faces.

You may also have noticed that there's no criticism of the oil companies. That's because(as my brother says) Bird Rescue sold out to the oil companies. It was once an all volunteer venture depending totally on donations. Now they're fully funded with paid staff and many rescue centers...paid by the oil companies.

He also says THERE IS REALLY VERY LITTLE OIL CLEANED UP. They make a big showy attempt at clean-up but you've seen what they're doing. A few 30' boats with 60'-90' of oil boom trying to SURROUND the oil. What a joke. The thick tar like oil globules are what's left of the lighter VOC's but the Higher TOXIC components sink to the bottom. Some of that info is being told in the form of 'killing fish, eggs and larval stage and may be harmful to future generations'. It doesn't sound alarming to the general population. It's unfortunate how blasais even this center of green thinking has become toward the oil companies.

I've been very interested in the Cosco Busan incident and following the news pretty closely. About the only new developments today are the NTSB and USCG findings: Cosco Busan radar was not malfunctioning and SF VTS had limited radar resolution:

As I discovered by looking at the animated SF VTS earlier today: Cosco Busan was moved this afternoon from it's locatation at SF General Anchorage to what appears to be San Francisco Ship Repair at the foot of 20th St. It has the largest floating dry dock on the West Coast.

My boat's out of commission until after Thanksgiving (regular 500 hr service, heat exchanger bundles being cleaned, new coolant hoses, etc.) so I won't be out on the water this weekend :(
But at least I'll avoid the goop.

Here's a link to some good advice if your boat does get too close to the bunker oil.

To summarize Baykeeper's advice:

1. Use your boat less (a long term goal for these people....)

2. Don't clean it in the water. Haul it out. They suggest KKMI, which is by far the most expensive boatyard in the SF Bay. (That way, you'll have less $$ to spend on fuel later....)

3. Don't use soap--use only an oil pad to remove the oil from your boat. (They mention that using soap to disperse an oil sheen is illegal, which it is. Using soap to clean your boat is not, by itself, illegal.)

4. Oil bad--don't touch.

Cleaning this stuff off of boat hulls ain't rocket science and any reputable yard can do it. In the East Bay, Berkeley Marine Center are going to be the best choice, considering price and the number of boats in the Berkeley Marina that are oiled.

Just wondering???

Don't most of the boats that have been fouled have a light scheen on them? Why not just take your boat out if you have been fouled and bring it up to maximum speed for a few minutes and let the crud sluff off? I can't imagine that anyone would have very much on the boat so as to create a further problem and this would be do it yourself cleaning and without having the need to file a claim.

Gnar,
I can see someone saying you're poluting by letting the water get rid of oil on your boat. :D

I can't begin to steer blame towards the company that manufactured the oil. How is Arco to blame if, when I crash my car, gasoline spills out? The pilot? Maybe. The captain? Maybe. The company who owned the ship... eh maybe. The Coast Guard? Not really. The company that manufactured the oil? I say they're as culpable in this as you and I are.

Except the oil companies have very deep pockets and we do not! It is all about the deep pockets......
