Day Trips/Overnighters

Actually, I don't think you are required to keep your VHF radio on.

You are required to use all available navigation aids on your boat while underway, including VHF, radar, depthsounder, etc...

Even without the requirement, why would you not use the aids that you paid for?

Choice man..... Choice

I usually do not run with my GPS when going over to croton...

John thanks for keeping me honest. I did a quick scan of 26.03 and I believe you are correct. But how one provides assistance to a vessel in need without a radio is beyond me. I still think that we should always have them on scanning the channels outlined above.
By the way Tony have a look at the rules of the road under the ROs pull down on the home page.

It's interesting that you'd be required to keep your radar on if so equipped but not your VHF. No matter, it doesn't hurt any to keep it on and monitoring.

You are not required to have an anchor on your boat either but I carry 3 anyway!

Actually, I think you are required to carry an anchor.

Nope, it should be a requirement but alas it is not Mike.

I stand corrected then but it is not a federal requirement.

Don't feel bad, John, most of the local cops have no clue as to what the rules are!

Hogan,

Remember the time when they were arguing with you over whether your teenage son had to wear his life jacket when you were anchored?

Your right, most of them are clueless.

My friend Dennis is back in charge on the Rockland County Sheriff's boat. He's one of the good guys.

Actually it was a guy on a boat near us. The Westchester police told him that any time his kid was on the boat he had to wear a PFD. The guy correctly advised them that the rule only applied while underway, and, since they were anchored, the kid didn't need to wear the PFD.

The cops kept arguing with him and when they threatened to give him a ticket, the guy picked up the kid and dropped him in the water! (By the way, the kid could swim just fine).

The cops didn't know what to do and just drove away!

That's correct. You have a lawyers memory!!!

Those guy's were out of line, clueless.

Good response by the father.

Gotta love it.

Jonathan

That was a good, funny response! But he's lucky the cops weren't in a bad mood.
