Deal Reached on San Joaquin River Legislation

Thanks for that info, DD! But I'll believe it when [if] I see it......

So they'll restore a dry section of the San Joaquin. Nice. But then they'll probably build a massive pump further downstream and suck it all out and send it to LA.

Thanks for the update! Good news...

I've been supporting the Bay Institute (www.bay.org) on this issue for years, they've been a primary lead.

Hope it happens, it's such a crime what has happened since the completion of Friant dam.

A Central Valley newspaper editor is not happy with the agreement this morning but I am hopeful it will proceed I don't think the farmers and irragation districts really want to take their chances back in court or with a new congress and administration. We should see in the next couple weeks if 60 years after the Friant dam was constructed water is allowed to flow down the San Joaquin. Flutterby, if the deal goes through I will bake a salmon loaf and we can have a potluck celebration. DD

This group only cares about Ag water, and getting more Ag water. Period.

Since their concern is water, and only water, and they DON'T care for this deal, that's GREAT NEWS!

Yahoo!!!

I agree with you Mitch and I think the farmers and their irrigation districts are going to take this deal because they are afraid of it going back to court or being taken up by less friendly congress and administration.
Instead of salmon loaf at the celebration potluck how about salmon salad sandwiches? I have had tuna salad sandwiches but not salmon salad so I did a Google search and found several receipies. The salmon and cuke sandwich sounds great. I think I saw canned salmon at Costco, I'll check.

Since it will be chilly in a couple weeks at the celebration potluck do you know what would be really good to go with the salmon and cuke sandwich?
Salmon bisque.
I had some lobster bisque last year in Maryland that had sherry in it and it was wonderful.

This is one of those mixed feelings type of news... as a boater I wold like to see the river restored and a much larger flow. As a farmer (my water comes from the river)in the Patterson area, I'll just have to wait and see what it really is going to mean. Presently my water is $33 per acre foot, and during the growing months I use 70 to 90 acre feet. This is for a small 18 acres in production farm. Can you imagine what several hundred acre farms pay?

Current toy, the large farms probably pay less then you per acre foot! LOL

DD---tell me when and where for that potluck! I love salmon. I'll be happy to bring something hot. How about hot crab dip and crackers? Yummy!

Flutterby, hot crab dip and crackers sounds wonderful at the celebration potluck that will go nicely with the salmon bisque and salmon salad and cuke sandwiches. I just saw a receipe for warm salmon salad with tortelini, yum.

If the San Joaquin river legislation goes through I can line up a place (probably Bethel Island) and time for the celebration potluck, it will be after Thanksgiving so the salmon will be a nice break after eating turkey. DD

Current Toy, you won't find much sympathy here. You're putting 4 to 5 FEET of water on every one of your acres in an area that normally gets only 12 inches of rainfall per year. You're growing crops (probably veggies) in the DESERT, and you're only able to do it because years ago people STOLE water from the San Joaquin and wrecked the delta environment in the process.

Yeah, you're making out in the desert, but the commercial fishermen who used to have a sustainable fishery in the delta, bay, and ocean are paying the price.

Frankly, if I were the beneficiary of such a travesty, I wouldn't go bragging about it here.

BTG

(Edited to correct bad math.)

A friend of mine makes the best yellow jello supreme cake and lemon meringue pie and that would go great with the salmon and crab dishes; hopefully he can attend if this San Joaquin river legislation goes through and we get to have a celebration potluck.

Hungry? me too, how does a toasted bagel with salmon, cream cheese and a cuke sound?

Once those Chinook salmon fill the San Joaquin river, we can catch one, grill it with applewood bacon, lemon and butter and have the leftover salmon in the morning on a toasted bagel or english muffin.

"A cuke is a long cylindrical fruit with a green rind and white flesh", I think they are in the melon family. We use to put cukes cut in chunks in stone jars with salt for a few days, rinse that off, then put in vinegar, sugar and cinamon sticks, after a few more days pack in sealed jars, process in a hot water bath, then store them in the dark cool basement and bring out a jar of bread and butter pickles when we needed them.
Above I was proposing a raw cuke slice on a toasted bagel with San Joaquin Chinook salmon and cream cheese.

Ahh ... sounds like a well prepared cucumber. That's how my grandmother did'em. Haven't tried them with the salmon/bagel/c-cheese but the contrasts of flavors sound intriguing.

Flutterby, you know another name for Chinook is King salmon because they get to be 40 pounds. Now we'll have a couple years to get ready for the 40 pounders. After looking at last summers pictures I remembered that I lost my ligumn vita (iron wood) club that I had in my tackle box. How does this sound for a plan, after we let the King run for a while we'll pull the King salmon up close to the boat then the labs and I will club him to subdue the beast push it up on the swim platform, then you can pull him over the transom into Pegasus? This is a July picture of Pegasus remember now she is flex fuel and has an electric trolling motor hanging off the transom too. I'll start looking for a new piece of iron wood, it grows in Florida, is very hard and heavy and it sinks, that's how I lost the last club, but I landed the beast. I'll put a leather strap on the new club too so the beast doesn't grab it out of my hand. Glad we are having Costco canned salmon this year at the potluck I need to get tooled up. DD
