We are looking to do a fall Hudson River trip. I am trying to build the trip around schedules of my wife and other friends. So far we have a possible 3-4 boats and could grow.

Where to go? I know many suggest Haverstraw. We would like some marina that we can get to a town. Half Moon gives us access to the Culinary institute. Other places ?

Is Liberty Landing on the way back a good stop over ?

Is mid October to late ? Below are some of my dates that I have off because my place of work closes for many of the Jewish holidays. So I am trying to use free vacation time, I have a nice block mid October. Any river or marina activities around theses dates ?

Haverstraw marina will be emptying out boats around mid October. Not much of a town but a good place to stay for deep water and slips. The restaurant is now open as well. I dont of any river activities around that time except for the foliage changing colors.

Foliage on the lower river doesn't really turn until the end of October unfortunately.

Kingston would be a good stopover, foliage mid October should be good up there.

Liberty is a good stop over, great view, Liberty State Park, ferry to NYC, Liberty House restaurant, slips are not cheap though.

Rob, don't you mean The Steel House in Kingston has fantastic burgers... I don't believe The Hudson House in Cold Spring has burgers on the menu

The farther north you go, the better the foliage will be.

Catskill is our favorite fall foliage cruise destination. It's not that much farther than Kingston (depending on cruising speed) and you will get much better views of the mountains.

Brad I agree with the above regarding foliage peaks. Sometimes in Kgn late October is better. Usually at that time of year it seems (lately) we get rain that hammers the leaves down. It looks like you are traveling for almost nine days at the peek of your holiday season.

Dan,

Actually we are planning a 4 day trip. The dates above are when I am off due to my organization being closed, we are trying to pick a block of days based on feedback. I am Christian, so these days are like free vacation days for me. It looks like now we are looking at Sat-Tuesday 10/11-14.

If we decided the following week, traditionally Marinas close for transients after Columbus weekend so I am not sure what would be available.

Any suggestions on Marina’s and places to visit would be helpful.

Brad I am sure that our place will have a spot for you those days. Perhaps the Kgn town dock will also. But reservations for a gang are a must regardless of where you intend to go. We could get a mess of "snow birds". With four days coming up from L.I. I would think about holding off on being too aggressive with distance.
We also recommend Liberty Landing although Liberty Island might be a better deal and you can still get the water taxi from that side as well. We've had many great walks around lower manhattan. Even as far up as the museum of natural history! The village, south street sea port, china town, little italy, are all do-able in a day although wear good walking shoes/sneakers.
While we have a small maritime museum and a couple of shops, there really isn't that much happening in Kgn by the water front but we do have many places to dine. Kgn is a short dink from our marina. Good Italian at Savona's, Ship to Shore for steak and sea food. Steel house for burgers and pizzas at lunch. Rositas is mexican and occasionally ok.

Half Moon Bay is no where near the Culinary Institute

A few years back, I had made reservations at Half Moon Bay I think it was 03 or 04 (a pending hurricane terminated that plan) and the Marina manager made it sound like there was easy transportation that we could get. I think he said something about a train stop near by that we could take. I forget the details.

At this point my group is considering Haverstraw the first night then up to Kingston then to Liberty Landing, we may add a day to the trip but so far it’s 4 days.

If there are any other Marinas that would be nice, please let me know. Also, does anyone here have #’s for the three mentioned above?

Thanks, Brad

Halfmoon is in Croton, The CIA is in Poughkeepsie.

There is a train stop at Croton, but is a 10 minute cab ride from the marina. The stop in Poughkeepsie is quite a distance from the CIA, and it's a one hour train ride each way.

You are better off in Haverstraw, the Brictown Brewery will pick you up at the marina and drop you back off when you're done eating.

The CIA is fun to dine at but not all you might expect and a bit over rated IMHO. I guess it depends on the student body at the time. Figure about 10 minutes from the train by cab.
If you were to stop at Tarrytown and dine at the Striped Bass (at the marina, by the train station which is very close to the marina) you would enjoy a good meal at a good price.

The CIA is actually in Hyde Park, north of Poughkeepsie. Poughkeepsie would be the train stop.

The cia is hard to get into without a res. also , at least it wes last time i was there so you might want to look into it + unless you have your heart set on the place it's not that impressive in my opinion , and it's not close to the boat like many other good resturants are. Have a good trip, the leaves on the mountains between Dunderberg mtn. and Storm King mtn. are some of the best views on the river.
best whishes Jon

Jon that's a good point. One time to get a fri or sat reservation there you had to call months in advance. I have no idea what it is like these days.

Yea we didn't know that Dan , but we just got lucky and they squeesed us in when we went, they told us the same thing " you need a res.".
That was about 2 years ago . We thought the same thing as you about the place ,good, but not all it's cracked up to be. Don't blame him for wanting to try it , just did'nt want him to waste his time getting there without a res.
Take it easy Dan & Deb , good talking to ya again ,splitting for champlain in a few days and we will stop by and say hello if we pull into roundout for a break but if I have my way it's 40 mph to to the fed lock or bust (LOL) _Jon_

Thanks all for the feedback, but more questions will be coming, I have never done the Hudson, always head east.

Dan , any preference to Rondout or Kgn or another ? At this point rates are not a real factor, $4-6 a foot makes no difference, looking for a quality place.

Can you dock near West Point or other places heading to Kingston. More sight seeing than eating.

It seems like it is about 45 miles to Kingston from Haverstraw, how is the entrance? Looks like a separate channel / river that goes back southwest.

Going into the Haverstraw marina, would we head in just south of G23/R24 ?

Best fuel stops / options ?

I have been to the CIA a couple of times and ate in 2 of their restaurants.

We stayed in Rhinebeck at the very old hotel I think it was Beekman Arms. We did make reservations months in advance. This was back 98-2000. I found it to be great. But it would depend on the students cooking. After watching Hells Kitchen I can only imagine what goes on behind the scenes.

Brad,

IMO, you have alot of stops in 4 days and some decent runs. By my reconning (which may be wrong) it is 1:45 from the lower end on Manhattan to Haverstraw and then another 2:35 from Haverstraw to Kingston at 18 knots. So day one you have a pretty long run from your home dock to Haverstraw. Then you have a long run from Kingston to Liberty Landing and then a long run home.

10/11 - Haverstraw
10/12 - Kingston
10/13 - Liberty Landing
10/14 - Home

Forgetting the fuel (which you almost have to do anyway) you spend a good part of 3 of 4 days with the departing, travel time, docking and checking in process.

Just my .02
