Fall Hudson River Trip

stop in jersy on the way up for cheap fuel (Alpine ?-low water at low tide though) , haverstraw is cheapest around this area I think for fuel, going in is easy line up with the entrance and go west it's wide and calm once your in.
When you figure out when your going let us know... we usually are out every chance we get and it would be nice to cruise a leg of the trip with you and say hi to another be sucriber.
Don't sweat the river it's a piece of cake if you follow the chart , enjoy it, the way it's been lately this year you will have the river to yourself during the week hardly no traffic theese days.
best whishes Jon

Mark, thanks for the .02... I appreciate putting things in perspective. Nothing is in stone, but would like to see as much north as possible. 3-4 hour legs is not an issue. But true there is no time to just chill.

However, this trip is more about sightseeing than anything and the ride on a river is the main event. It is different than the ocean with no land or just a distant shoreline.

What would be a suggestion of a 4 day trip destination to get the best bang and still have time to relax ?

I would recommend the first night at Tarrytown marina, the Striped Bass is an excellent restaurant.

Head up to Rondout the next day and stay at
Rondout Yacht Basin or the town docks. dink down to the end of the creek, visit Pete & Dan.

Make sure you have charts of the river, there are a couple of spots where you MUST obey the markers and stay in the channel - notably just north of the Bear Mountain Bridge, and at the Esopus Meadows lighthouse.

You can stop at the Newburgh waterfront for a good meal.

Thanks Hogan, we will consider Tarrytown.

Looking at Map Source I found Rondout, Kingston Municipal Docks and Kingston Lighthouse Harbor which seems to be more on the mainland, than Rondout. But I do think I did hear good things about Rondout. Preference ?

Liberty Landing Marina or Liberty Harbor Marina and park … they are next to each other, which would be nicer? Liberty Landing seems to be what has been posted positive.

Instead of Liberty, what about Channel Club, its just south of there in NJ.

Liberty Landing is nice. I've stayed there and I know Rob has.

Yes I know I have posted that LL is a good stop given the water taxi. I have yet to try out Libery Island tho, and have heard that it is not so bad. Not having walked around on the other side there, I don't know about it at all but it has built up in recent years. Might be worth a look? I dunno...
We are at RYB and as I said, it is a short dink to the town dock and dining. RYB is ok. If you are alright with staying on your boat and not having to go ashore to shower etc. the Kgn town dock is going to be fine, perhaps better since you can just walk back to the boat from dinner. You really don't want to walk from RYB to Kgn for dinner and back. But if you intend to launch dinks, it will be more quiet and the dink ride is fun.
By the way, a dink ride up to the anchorage for dinner is not bad and while it seems a bit rustic, the food is good and the price beats the heck out of Kgn proper. Their blue cheeze strip steak is awesome.

Just South? Hmmmm.... Thats sort of like saying Block Island is just east of Manhattan. (Ok so not that bad!)

Seriously, the channel club is about 25-30 miles south and that includes a fairly long no wake zone. I'd say roughly an hour and a half apart.

Brad here is a shot of the meadows...

Note the black line is where you want to be, perhaps a bit east and try not to wake the light house.

If you go west of the light house, you will become of member of the "I mowed the Meadows" club, granting you the rights and priveleges of humiliation...

Well from Ambrose how far is Channel Club, could be a good first stop, or on way home.
I want to go there. Been to Liberty Landing already.

Just did a quickie plot and it is 24 miles from Ambrose Light to the channel club with
approx 6 miles of no wake giving a trip time of 1 hour and 45 minutes for the total segment.

For those suggesting Liberty Landing + water taxi, have you ever tried North Cove at the base of the WFC? http://www.thenorthcove.com/

As far as Half Moon Bay in Croton is concerned, I wouldn't reccommend it and I live in Croton. Similar to any bedroom community, we have a handful of good restaurants, sadly nothing on the water. The train station is about a 15 minute walk and HMB has a jitney for their residents that perhaps you can hop on.

However, if the train is what you want, Tarrytown Marina has a station literally across the street. For sight seeing, a few of these destinations can be reached from a cab at Tarrytown. http://www.hudsonvalley.org/ Also, Tarrytown does have a nice downtown area with coffee houses, night life, etc just a short walk away.

North Cove is quite bouncy, nothing to protect the place.

Have fun running that gauntlet if the tide is in full swing...........

Narrow opening + ripping current = white knuckles!!!

This will be a short 4 day aggressive travel trip, but the ride is the main event, so I don’t mind leaving at 8-9 and running 3 hours taking in the sights then pulling into a marina. Will have the rest of the afternoon and evening to hit a town or just hang.
We most likely will not be bringing a dink but that could change. For me it is not convenient and I mostly bring mine on short trips for raft-ups when I can just pull it.

Seems like Tarrytown may be a good choice with more to do, but I always wanted to stay at the Haverstraw marina. Hogan was right on with the lobsters in Newport so his suggestion of Tarrytown will be considered.

After reading Dan’s post it seems like RYB would be better if we had a dink with us which we may not. So is the KGN municipal docks the place to be ?? Is there a town dock and a municipal dock or are they one in the same? Is the meadows near KGN ?

Finally Liberty Landing seems to be a good place for a night on the way back.

Some have posted that mid October may not have color. I don’t know about that, I got to believe by October 12th when passing Bear mountain and West Point I am sure that it will have some color, maybe not in full color, but some in the mountains. I guess it will all depend on the temps around that time.

You could look into Atlantic Highland as an alternative to Liberty Landing.. not as far as The Channel Club, a good resturant and a nice marina..

If youare planning on staying at Kingston Town Dock you should call soon. I am not sure exactly when but they have an Italian Fest in Oct and the docks fill up fast....

WE stayed at the Kingston Town Dock in June. Due to our size, we were put on the bulkhead at the end of Broadway. The staff is very friendly, the price is right ($1.50 as I recall), but the amenities are scant, or shall we say rustic. Bathroom facility is the the public one in the adjacent park. 30 amp service only, but they will provide a 50 amp Y if you don't have one. The town maintains a strong police presence there, so it mitigates the "open to the public" aspect. There are also slips at the Maritime Museum, which has private bath and showers, but they were $2.50 and not worth the difference from what I could see. We found it very convenient to step out of the boat and into the town, which we really enjoyed. There is a bus up into Kingston proper and the town dock gives you two passes. We didn't use them as there was plenty going on for one night down on the water. Armadillo has near-gourmet Tex Mex, which was a very pleasant surprise, having lived in California and Texas the bulk of my life and taking that cuisine very seriously.

On the way up and back, we anchored inside of Croton Point; quite mellow when we were there. We used Great Kills Harbor on Staten Island (Mansion Marina in our case) as our New York base. Nice restaurants by the shore side (not the state park ) marinas. Since we don't mind public transportation, it was just a block to catch the express bus into Manhattan or the local to the Staten Island Ferry. You have to allow an hour to the Village and another half hour to mid town. Liberty Landing or Lincoln Harbor are going to be nicer and closer; since we were staying a week we were much more casual about our time.

If you have never been up the Hudson, you are in for a real treat. It was one of the top experiences in my pretty varied cruising career.

Just to add my 2 cents - we're on the Rondout too - Gary (Tanqueray) has just posted a bunch of pics on another thread (that was me in the shirt with all the "flies" on it). RYB is a great stopover and so is the town docks, although your best bet will be during the week as they will probably fill up for foliage season. Then again with $4/gal gas you never know...

The Anchorage at the head of the navigable Rondout is worth the trip up, and depending when you come we might have spaces by then as some boats would be out of the water already. Even if its just a dinner stop, you can tie up at our dock if a space is available. I can make those arrangements for you. Its also a very pretty lagoon seldom seen by Hudson River travelers because its over 3 miles inland from the River at mostly no-wake speeds. In mid-October the colors and sunsets can be quite pleasant...

For other choices on the Rondout, we ate at Rosita's Mexican restaurant on the creek the other day - excellent food and a good price, and a nice view too. Same with Mariners, the Steel House, and other fine restaurants in town...

Norrie Park, on the east side of the River south of Esopus Meadows, is also a pleasant day stop (or overnight too, but there are zero facilities except restrooms/showers). It offers a great place for a picnic and excellent views of the River from some high ground where there are picnic tables...

BTW George, glad you enjoyed your cruise. Perhaps next time you're in the neighborhood we can link up...

Well it’s a go unless something unforeseeable happens. Looks like just BillyK (Tortuga Bound) and Radio Waves are cruising up.

The plan is Saturday 10/11 Tarry Town, Sunday 10/12 Rondout , then Liberty Landing 10/13, then travel home on 10/14. It’s a fast sightseeing trip, but should be fun.

Not looking to travel around for pump-out or fuel so are there these facilities at the above mentioned locations? I would think so.

I see Pete suggested a few good eats local. If only one night what would be the choice ? It will be Linda and my 15th wedding anniversary on the 12th , is it far to get to a decent restaurant in Rondout ?

Oh yes and how are the leaves as far as color up there ?
