Fleet Week 2009

Don't have my chart or chart plotter in front of me, but was plenty deep. My biggest worry that day was the pier behind me.

I believe, that he is anchoring in between Aquatic Park and Fort Mason. That may be available again, but while they were conducting the AirBull races, this was a restricted anchoring area. Usually the USCG has a diagram showing what areas are restricted and it is issues as a LNTM. We too have anchored there, the view is great, but it can be a little rolly if there is a swell coming in the GG.

The USCG has finally issued their diagram of the closed areas. It can be found here: http://www.military.com/fleetweek/fleet-week-2009-public-boating-notice.doc and it appears that the area suggested by EngineWorks is once again allowed. Hopefully you'll see us out there; we'll be in a white ProLine 20Walk with a hardtop and radar dome. I usually monitor ch. 16 & 72, so give me a shout and say hello.

Thanks a lot. I wouldve been boating right on the parade route if not for this. This is my first time boating to Fleet Week. How's the weather look this weekend? My weather iPhone app reports moderate chop on San Pablo bay for the next 6-12 hours. Only a 6mph wind. Direction NNE. Hopefully this holds through the weekend.

Great weather this weekend, but horrible starting Monday. I'd cut and run asap after the show!

Today was great. A slight breeze with only a couple boats and a great show.

I'm docked at Jack London Marina by kincaids. Smooth sailing today. Saw a decent number of boats crossing San Pablo.

Had engine trouble 200 yds from the marina. Starboard engine won't go in gear forward, only reverse. Mobile mechanic is coming out 7am tomorrow. Based on my description he thinks the throttle cable needs to be replaced. Hopefully he can make quick repairs to salvage the weekend. Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Engine cranks and revs but the throttle moves forward easily even without depressing the button on the side tuT takes it out of gear. It acts like it's stuck out of gear Nd I can't get it in gear.

Wayne,
who is the mobile mechanic that you called?
Hope that he can fix your problem quick.

mike holman with San Francisco fibre fab. Mobile, reliable with good rates. He did some minor things on my boat a few months ago. Has a ton of experience. I'll let you know if he can get me out of this bind which has kind of ruined my evening.

Wayne,

It sounds as if the cable may have come disconnected from the throttle/shifter assembly. You said that you can still get it into reverse or not? It's a better failure that way because you don't find yourself approaching a dock rapidly with no way to stop the boat. Many years ago, I had a cable break without my knowing it. I was maneuvering in close and when I went to stop the boat, I pulled it into reverse, but the boat wasn't slowing so I throttled up in reverse. Little did I know that I was still in forward gear. The boat jumped forward, I swung the wheel and the bow of the boat hoppped right up onto the dock. Luckily I missed the boats docked there, my boat slid back off and we were able to diagnose the problem.

Hopefully the mobile mechanic coming out is the guy that serviced your engines when you bought the boat and he can explain how he missed the bad cable. Outboard Motor Shop and Svendsens are nearby, so he might be able to get parts. Talk to Barney or Craig at Outboard Motor Shop and tell them I sent you. If anybody can find the parts those guys can do it! We'll probably be launching at Grand Avenue in Alameda, so we may see you in the morning if you're not fixed and out enjoying the show. Hope it all works out for you!

thanks Dave
yea sounds like the cable alright. I talked to ob motorshop and they said they have hundreds of cables but need the part number. The plan is mechanic comes to my boat tomorrow at 7am to confirm that that is the problem. Ob motorshop opens at 9am. We go and get the part. Mechanic says it takes about 1 hr to install. Meet up with buddies and head out by 11am. That's best case scenario but I hope it goes just that smoothly.

Dave
how dis they fix the broken cable? My
mobile mechanic didn't quite seem like he could confront the issue. How much did it cost to get the repair done? Intest drove the boat on one engine and I'm only getting 3200 rpms and 10mph. Boat wasn't designed to run on one 250 hp engine. I like my mechanic bit not sure if he is mercruiser certified.

Wayne,

When it happened to our ski boat, they just replaced the complete shift/throttle cable completely, but I had to bring it to yheir shop.

When I went by Jack London Marina about 11:00 am, I didn't see any boats that resembled yours. We stopped for fuel there and headed across the Bay. We were in a 20 foot Proline and it was a little sloppy out there, so I took a chance and pulled inside the breakwater for the Hyde Street Pier. Many years ago, we took our whole boat club in there and anchored in a raft up of about seven boats. It is the perfect spot, but a few years later the SFPD ran us out of there and said they were getting too many complaints from commercials trying to get in and out of there.

Back there we were pretty protected from the wind, totally from the swell and chop. I cruised around a little and decided to drop an anchor. Soon there were half a dozen others boats anchored too although we had the usual crowd of guys who think you drop the anchor until it hits the bottom and then tie it off. One boat continually drifted around trying to anchor and made everyone a little nervous, but overall it was a pretty nice day. The big disappointment was when the Blue Angels called the show off after only a couple of passes due to weather.

We headed back to the Estuary, stopped at Scott's Seafood for cocktails and an appetizer while the launch ramp cleared out. Headed back for an uneventful pull out and are back home now. Hope you guys had a good time out there as well. If there's anything I ca do to help with your shift cable tomorrow, let me know, I'll just be hanging out and could run for parts if you need them. My cell is 925-260-0669

To all,

I have to apologize. I me4ant to reply to Wayne's posting but, as a moderator, I must have hit the wrong icon and ended up editing his post. Since I don't recall what was there, Iam deleting what I wrote.

This was no effort at censorship, I simply goofed, sorry.

Wayne, sorry to hear of your troubles with the boat. Every trip out is an adventure! And just think, you got a train ride thrown in for added adventure!!! I hope the costs are minimal for you.

Yep. When boating you often have to look at the bright side of things. I should hav the boat fixed this week and will try to move it back to Martinez this upcoming weekend.

I don't know how many from here were near that pier on Saturday but I took photos of several yachts that were out there. Looked like quite a show from the Ft. Mason pier. I will post the photos in the next couple days.

Just heard back from the mechanic. Boat is fixed. The weather is way too bad to try and get back to Martinez. Will need this storm to pass first of course. Fortunately Oakland Marina is an ALMAR marina so I have reciprical priveleges. That means I can stay there as long as I like.
