fuel are you kidding me

Ben how much fuel do you have on board? Do you want to fill up when I call for a delivery? I believe we have three at the moment.

I have been on board to see 40 mph and it was smooth as can be. Thanks again to the ride it was fun next time I'll drive if the tides work:)

Right there with you, put two of my kids on ebay, got a fair price so I am good to go this season. Still have one kid left if gas gets out of control.
Next season, I have a choice, the dogs or the wife, not sure yet. :)

You are burning more than he is. You come to 1.259 - 1.286 GPM.

You are running only 230-250 rpms off the top? Cat recommends 300-400 off the top rpm. What does Volvo recommend for cruise rpm?

My 660's burn 42 gallons going 26 knots (30 mph), I top out at about 2340 per, motor is rated for 2300. So I get 1.4 GPM but I am pushing 50,000# loaded with fuel and water.

Volvo recommends 200-250 under WOT, however my max WOT is 2750. Both Volvo mechanics from two different companies said the engines, if propped right, will hit 2750 before the governor kicks in.

You said earlier your motors are rated for 2600 max rpm. If you are running 2750 max you are way underpropped.

Typical rule is to try to get as close or equal to 50 rpm's over max rating and you are doing your motors a big favor.

My engines are rated as 2600 max, according to Cummins (and Tony Athens) I should hit 2750 at WOT.

Mine are rated for 2800 and I hit just over 2800 I would feel better if I could get a few more rpms but I was told it's perfect and no need to make any changes.

Okay, finally got to the log and here is what I have.

Day 1 - West Palm Beach to Patrick AFB.
128 miles estimated
113 Gallons
8.5 hours

Day 2 - Patrick AFB to Halifax Harbor, Daytona
96 miles estimated
78 Gallons
7 hours

Day 3 - Halifax Harbor, Daytona - Jacksonville NAS
128 miles estimated
118 Gallons
8 hours

Total
352 Miles
309 Gallons
23.5 Hours

Looks like we averaged 14mph burning 13.5gph getting 1.13mpg. I am sure if we stepped up the pace we would have burned a lot more. The bazillion Manatee zones really slow you down. That and all the folks fishing just off the sides of the main channel.

Those are some great numbers! Do you happen to know what RPMs you were running at to maintain 14 mph? I would have to guess about 15 - 1600 RPMs. This would mean I will burn next to nothing heading up to lake Champlain largely no wake zone sounds like a great trip for this year.

The specs says WOT is 2600, however you should be able to hit 2750. This tells you that you are propped correctly.

I just went through my log book.

During our trip, which was 95% at cruise speed, I burned 32 GPH.

Overall, including running genny, warm up & down, idling to destination, etc.., my number is 21.6 GPH.

The 21.6 is a "make believe" number - if I want to impress people I can use that, but the REAL number that I will use is 32. In fact, I will use 35 when calculating how much fuel I need to get somewhere.

Sorry in advance for the newbie question. If you know nautical miles wouldn't it be better to use npg? Unless you know how many hours it will take I just don't understand how that works.

John, if you calculate your speed in knots, then you would use nmpg.

I prefer MPH, it's easier for me, so I use GPH.

Everyone here knows what a mile is, not everyone knows what a nautical mile is.

Easier to talk in a language everyone can understand.

Do you have a flow scan to calculate this? I do not the only numbers I can calc is average.

No floscan. I record hours and gallons and do the simple calculation. I filled up, ran, and filled up again several times. Divide the gallons by the hours run, and you get GPH.

It's real, running numbers, and they are consistent with Cummins specs.
