What do you consider "so far out" Dave?
We spent the night out by ourselves and placed a proper amount of scope, fore and aft to be safe in case of any possible pop up storms. The next day people seemed to feel that they would decide how much scope was acceptable around people that were already there.
I was always taught that when entering an anchorage you need to respect the rights of those there ahead of you and make sure you do not anchor in such a way to endanger them or yourself. Are you saying that when things get packed the people already safely anchored should shorten things up?
