GSB Ice over......

For a lonnnnng time, ice boats were the fastest human designed transport devices on planet earth.

Bobsleds came along afterwards I believe, breaking the ice boat speed records.

Today’s storm that is not much to speak of at this hour may end up causing more issues than a blizzard. Ice and wind are very dangers. Winds are beginning to pick up as I write this.

I just saw a special on NDC about major climate changes, and not necessarily global warming, but an ice age. I know they love to report the sky is falling to get ratings. But the Montreal ice storm just a few years back was very real and can happened to us. It crippled a major city for days. The video footage of steel towers collapsing was a very disturbing.

My boat is usually one of the last to come out for the Winter. November was just great this year.

As a kid, the bay always froze over and a snow day meant 1-2' of snow.

we walked from Massapequa to Babylon one year, maybe early 70s...

And we had a rumor of a car in the Nassau Shores cove too but I think it was Snoped...

I am suppose to be going on a cruise tommorow, leave islip airport at 6:40 am..... last minute deal and I did not take insurance..... I think I may be screwed...

I had to walk ten miles to school,uphill both ways through six feet of snow, wearing no shoes and a backpack the weighed over 100 lbs!

I landed at JFK today. It was bumpy coming in and runway looked like a sheet of ice, but we stopped!
By tommorow it will be fine, though Islip does not have the equipment JFK has.

An adult man's average walking speed is 3 mph, a child's would be less, which means you started your adventure to school at around 0430 to make it on time...unescorted. Also, at some point you would have to be going downhill, not to mention that with 72" of ground cover, a 48-52" tall kid would be walking totally submerged in the snow with no reference to bearing...which means you wouldn't have had the foggiest idea of where the F you were. The lack of shoes is immaterial.

From a power-to-weight ratio, I find it wholly implausible that you were able to cope with that kind of backpack given the above referenced data.

One thing we can deduce from this outrageous testimony is that an Irish-Polish descended lad who speaks in green tongue clearly didn't have the wherewithall to confront his parents as they sent him out the door in this shabby condition in appalling conditions with a questioning "WTF"?

I trust, at least now, you can ask WTF if something doesn't seem right to you?

(just a horrible story...I'll probably be up all night with chills)

Mike, as a member of the 1973 NYS Championship 2 mile relay team, I was able to travel well over 3 MPH.

Also, as one of 7 children, nobody knew where the hell I was, what I was doing, or when I left for school. All that mattered was the 7 kids were their beds come nightfall.

The lack of shoes was important, as it meant less weight, and afforded me a better grip on the frozen tundra. The weight of the backpack provided the extra traction needed to scale the 70 degree incline, it also held extra beer, in case I was stranded.

Most times, we would tunnel under the snow, therefore the fact that it was 6' deep was of little consequence.

Brad, I tried to delete it earlier when I noticed the same thing and it didn't seem to work. Just did it again and I think it's gone. But I also just noticed that my avatar photo isn't showing, only the red X. I have the frozen bay pics on a Photobucket album but can't seem to figure out how you guys can access it from here. Any help would be appreciated and sorry about spreading out the post........I hate it when that happens too and now I seem to be the guilty one!

It is mostly one big sheet, with some open areas. Sometimes there are no open, and as per some of the posts, cars, people, ice sail boats etc, can travel on the ice. Not at that stage this year, yet….. When it breaks up it is in smaller sheets then seem just to melt away.
 
I was just a kid, but I remember clearly the car that went through the ice in the babylon area. It was some sort of Monte Carlo or another big sedan of that type. It went through about 1 mile west of the RMB about 1.5 miles out. For 10 years after the CG had a obstruction buoy on it. We used to make a few bucks dragging sleds of clams back to the babylon docks. The danger wasn't of the ice breaking, but falling through an area that already had a hole cut by previous digging.

Just a few years ago, maybe 1998 or 99 that the bay froze over and we took two trikes across to FI from my house in Patchogue. Never made to the beach, piles of ice were too broken up.
