I am new to this board, so hello to all. Was just wondering if anyone around here works for a living??? 
(just breakin' em') I love all the tales cause as a kid in Brooklyn, the closest we came to the frozen water was trying to fish off an icy pier at the docks! However, we did build ice forts.

What part of Brooklyn? I grew up there around 29th and J and a couple of other near by places, went to Midwood High, Kingsborough / Brooklyn College. Spent a lot of time at Sheepshead Bay, Garretson Beach and any other place there was water.
Moved out in 1989 headed east to Bayside then for the last 14 years here in Brightwaters.

Yeah, Radiowaves. It was I a little while back. I opted to stay at SS3 for this 1st season with my new/used boat. Thanks anyway. Came from Red Hook Houses near Brooklyn Navy Yard until13 then moved to Ridgewood, Queens, then Woodhaven, then Florida, then Boston, then back to L.I., N.Y. Got married in 86 and living in Bayshore since 93. Is Radiowaves the name of your boat?

Yes my boat name is Radio Waves. We are always at the local spots in and around the area, FI etc.

I just came back from the LIYC docks. Last night started another major layer in and around the docks. The ice-eaters barley can keep up. We may loose a couple of the outer polls. We have about 50 eaters running. Some just die on you and you can’t get them out or put a new one in if the ice freezes over.
Winter started like a lamb and turned evil. No real snow, but this cold is playing havoc at the dock. The worst part is the tide is so low and I have ice on my platform and entrance that I would not take a chance to get on board. I know I have some nice cold adult beverages just waiting in the galley. Oh well, should warm up a little in a few days.

Brad.....It's getting in the upper 30's for a few days..... it should start to melt. It sounds like your ice eaters may be set to deep. They should only be about 6" under the water.
One year I had to break away ice with a lump hammer.....from the swim platform.... I almost needed to put the inflatable in on top of the ice at one point...to get the canal side of the boat. It gets better soon.

Not to worry, Brad. Don is right, by Thursday they say 43 degree & soon SPRINGTIME!! yippee!
Mark...... I use to go deep....but like Brad said...it doesn't seem to move the water enough...and freezes in. I find if you push ( splash ) the water up higher... it tends not to freeze in......if I go too deep...on low tide its in the mud....Also I set mine up different...I hang it off the bow pulpit... in place of the anchor.....and lift it out when its not needed........IMHO

At the LIYC we place Ice-Eaters a couple different ways. If you have a boat in the water for the winter the member is responsible for supplying an Ice-Eater.
Depending on which dock you are on you place the Ice-Eater on the same side as the other boats, either all port or all starboard. This way, there is one Ice-Eater between each boat. The club supplies one in every other empty slip, skipping one in-between. Our eaters can cover about 30-40 feet radius under normal freeze conditions.
The eaters attached to poles, are placed somewhat off the bottom and just below where the lowest tide will be. At high tide they will be about 2 feet below the surface and create a sufficient bubble. When the tide is low, the eaters will be bubbling with a great deal of surface bubble. The ones attached to the boats go up and down even with the tide changes.
In some of the literature they recommend keeping them deeper to bring up the warmer water from the bottom. But agreed with Don it does cause other problems, like muck, weed etc. We choose to go with the mid/deeper level method. The Dock Chairman, or myself shake them up every day or so. The LIYC technical term is “Time to Bounce the Churners”
The problem that we are having are some of the eaters are old and been running for about two weeks straight, so some just stop working. By the time someone gets there to pull it out for repair, the ice freezes over and unless you can get near the eater to break up the ice, its just sits idle in a frozen state. Because they are on lines and pulleys to the outer poles, we can not replace unless we can free the broken one. The ones between the boats is an easier fix.
Well, this concludes my Saturday morning coffee driven Ice-Eater story.
