I see Facebook updates from Great South bay Sea tow and I have seen a couple of boats they pulled off "Hairy Island"
Can someone tell me where that is? How it got its nickname?
Seems like a popular place to run up onto late at night.
Thanks
Ed

I've always referred to it as the island just off timber point as your coming into connetquot river. It is low and if your coming from the west at night and you r too close to shore entering connetquot you'll hit it. You'll see Riverview restaurant clear as day and all of a sudden you see the island too late. I only know this from second handed sources :)

Channel is well marked though.
I stay in center running through there, then I head north and turn.
If you try to cut that corner you run out of water quick and it's not marked with a green, just a red to the north.
Chart calls it Nichols Island.

It's the eastern side and the adjacent sandbar off of Nicoll Island which like zane said is just east of Timber Pt. It's extremely difficult to see at night if you're trying to enter the Connectquot River from Nicoll Bay. The area is marked, but only by 2 private(ie not buoys) red flashing lights which are a quarter of a mile apart. This makes it very tricky because if you mistake the west light for the east light, you'll run right up on hairy island. I'm not sure how it got it's name or even if that's the official name, but that's what we've always called it at Sea Tow. You would not believe the number of boats we've pulled off there over the years. Good thing is, that it's so low that most of the boats come off undamaged. I tried to attach a chart, but I think you need to use some 3rd party photo hosting site to do that, and I'm not sure exactly what the process is.

If you ever went swimming there and touched the bottom, you then realize were the name came from. The eel grass is very long and feels gross.

I was just on hairy island. There is a lot of fuzzy mud on the river side.

Other side of island is a nice beach with a awesome lagoon.
I want to see how deep that lagoon is as it would be great place to anchor. It faces the bay with a wide entrance.
