I'm a new boater to the Hudson and have been looking at Haverstraw Marina. Has anyone had problems with the factory near the north slips? (dirt, noise, etc?)
The noise is not too bad but the gypsum dust can be very annoying. They average about a ship load a week. When the ship is unloading the boat gets dirty.
The conveyor from the ship over the road to the factory is actually fairly quiet. The dust is sometimes a problem, but a good hose down will take care of that. I think the pollen dust in the spring is worse than the gypsum dust because it sometimes gives your boat a green tinge. Some will say that Haverstraw is too big and/or unfriendly but that is simply not true. AND...you'll ALWAYS have enough water under your boat to caome and go when YOU please. Good luck.
John's been at Haverstraw longer than I but the gypsum dust has never just hosed off our boat. In fact it can do damage to your isinglass if you don't clean it properly. Took me a while to figure out the unload schedule so that I didn't wash my boat the day before the damn thing arrived.
One time that I was there when the unloading was going on there was some sort of problem. The clouds of dust were so thick you could not see across the fairway.
The deep water is very hard to beat. That said, we prefer the more family friendly atmosphere of Stony Point and are leaving Haverstraw. Will continue to winter at Haverstraw thou...
Gypsum not a problem really. Boat is going to get dirty regardless of where you are. It does force you to take better care of your glass though I will say.
For me Haverstraw is too big, not unfriendly, although there are a few snoots, just big. I too like the atmosphere of a smaller marina. Contemplating a move to PennyBridge, but as rommer said, the deep water at Haverstraw has kept me there all these years.
Rommer (I believe) is on the North side near the conveyor belts so he probably gets more Gypsum then boats on the south side of the marina.
I dont get much gypsum at all on my boat. Its more the pollen and dirt in general or even soot from the power plants smoke stacks.
Its not that bad. I have been there for 18 years. Its a nice marina and you have to take some good and bad where ever you go. The deep water, being very protected and the good friends we have made are what keep us there.
Yeah Butch, we are thinking about it. We really liked the slip Steve put us in last summer after he launched our boat. We didn't want to leave! I also love being able to see the river from my boat rather than the "yacht dock". Plus Pennybridge maintains the boat...it's smaller & more personal...they don't nickel & dime you...you don't have to carry an oxygen tank if you need to go to your car and it's 95 degrees....and the best part..all you guys to drop anchor on!!!
I always thought the walk was the reason for the first COLD beer....
It would be great having you over Judy. Nothing like a small marina with down to earth people, not that there are not good people over there. We all know there are. Its just I am at Penny Bridge....
As the moderator of this forum, I am required to maintain my independence, therefore, from a totally unbiased standpoint, PennyBridge is by far the best marina on the Hudson River, in every way imaginable.
I agree PB has some great selling points but perfect?
No pool and great big giant fuel tanks that would cause a major bang if they ever went up in smoke right next door. I know several people that passed on PB because of the giant tanks.
Those 2 issues aside, PB still ranks up there as one of the best.
