It's been suggested that I use Pine Sol as a holding tank cleaner, deodorizer, disinfectant.

Any comments or suggestions on this product. Or any other way to help with holding tank maintenance.

One of these.

Calgon will aid in loosening up the stuff stuck to the sides.

You can use whatever you wish in the tank, as long as it is put directly into the tank and not flushed in through the toilet. Pine-Sol and other petroleum-based products wreak havoc with the rubber seals and gaskets in marine toilets and should NEVER be put into a marine toilet.

Just make sure you rinse the tank out two or three times with clean fresh water, pumping it out and refilling it each time, before putting the tank back into service. Any residual Pine-Sol in the tank will retard the growth of the "good bacteria" inside the tank, which works to keep the odor down.

Water softener. Available in the grocery store near the laundry detergent.

I don't see any good reason to "disinfect" a marine holding tank. You're just going to poop in it again, right?

If you use any of the "natural" odor control products (I use Ororlos), any remaining soaps or chemicals will hinder their operation.

I used to wonder why anyone would want to clean a holding tank. Then I bought a level sensing gauge that relies on sensors fastened to the outside of the tank. These sensors are fooled by solids clinging to the inside wall of the tank.

I cut a hole in the top for a gasketed access panel and cleaned it with a combination of water pressure from a hose and a toilet brush.

My tank is very easy to get to so I can do this anytime I wish (but not when we have company).

That "spinning thing" pictured above worries me. If it doesn't have a backflow preventer, it could contaminate the water supply used to operate it. In other words, draw raw sewage into the marina's water system.

I have the Tornado installed in my holding tank and I use the "blue" treatment that has a tank cleaner in it. I also rinse twice after every pump out.

FYI, the tornado flusher has a back flow preventer. I have it installed in my holding tank, but to be even safer I have a dedicated hose for rinsing the tank.

Anybody tried Rid Ex ? The septic tank stuff. I know it helps reduce the amount of methane (or whatever septic smell is) in septic systems.

Or what about diluted toilet bowl cleaner. (I'm talking about putting any of these down the pump out tube, not flushing)

Dawn dish soap ? Cuts grease, is poo the same. . . .never mind

Why does Calgon cut poo stuff from the inside of the tank ?

Huh . . Huh. . .Why Daddy Why ?

i have a charcoal filter on the vent line and ever since that was installed the smell problems dissapeared. absent a blocked line, is there any reason to do anything other than empty the holding tank? the boat gets used regularly and anytime we are on the ocean the movement of the boat does a better job sloshing the contents around than a rinse would do. but i'm certainly willing to be open minded about this.

Go ask your mother.

Actually it is an old trick RV'ers have used for years. It breaks down the chemical bond of the existing goop (Don't you f#cking DARE ask me how!) and then coats the inside of the tank so the goop can't stick. I have never heard of a contra indication with CP, KO or Odorloss.

HTH.

Now go outside and play in the traffic.

Vic33004;

My opinion only.

If the smells disappeared after installing the filter, you are masking the smell. It is being absorbed by the charcoal.

I am not a fan of filters and would take it off Saint Max in a heartbeat, BUT, the vent line is too small to be effective without a filter. On my 2465 Regal, the vent line was somewhere around an inch and a half. I took an old piect of black garden hose and shoved it in the vent to rinse the tank while pumping out. Never had a smell problem.

One thing about the internet. . . . . Pu**y's turn into big tuff guys when they hide behind a keyboard. That would be YOU Ja**ass.

Gave Vic and Les plenty of time to moderate your 'over the top' post. Even e mailed them about your abusive and hateful post, (as described in #5 of the forum rules) no response from either. Guess there are no rules. So responding as I see fit.

You would be well served to put a sock in it, but you won't, you're a keyboard fu**ing bully.

Go ahead now David, show everyone what a big man you are. . . .Daddy.

david;

you're right the filter does remove the smell but isn't that the idea?

in the warm waters of south florida a filter is not an option, its required. i tried all kinds of different treatment types and they all invariably led back to the same place. about 3 days in and the smell could be overwhelming depending on the wind direction. after putting the filter on, the problem was gone. i take care to never overfill the tank so i'm not worried about the filter getting blocked. its an 1 1/2" line and pretty healthy sized filter on a 40 gallon tank.

It was intended to be a joke. If it offended you, I apologize. There was no offense intended. Perhaps an emoticon at the end was in order.

Edited to delete double post.

Doesn't the 4260 come standard with a Vacuflush. I wonder how the smell is generating in a fresh water environment. Salt water I could understand.

I wonder how Pascal handles the issue as a south FL Liveaboard.

Bobalong;

IMO you read David all wrong. He's been on this site for a long time, and his longterm track record speaks for itself. While some of the words in his post may seem offensive, he's proven to be a stand-up guy.
