Holding tank cleaner

david, yes there is a vacuflush system on board with fresh water. the smell did not come from the head, but rather the holding tank vent, or in my case used to until i installed an in line filter. i'm pretty sure that became standard equipment in subsequent years on that boat.

it was a never ending battle to treat the holding tank waste with all kinds of chemicals and bacteria etc. the filter paid for itself the first year in not having to buy more chemicals never mind the fuss. I'm pretty sure the issue had more to do with the higher temps here than anything else.

Interesting...that counters a lot of what I have learned here at BE. Then again, there are no absolutes. Did you custom make the filter yourself. I have never seen one with inch and a half fittings. I'll be sawing mine in half this summer a - la Rommer's method. No smell problems to date, however some preventive maintenance couldn't hurt. That and I haven't cut anything in half in a while!
 
david, i found the filter at w/m, its made by sealand. they offer it in both 3/4 and 1 1/2" size. not always in stock in the larger size but if not they can bring it in. its a about twice the size of the 3/4" model but it lasted 5 years before needing to be recharged so it really more than paid for itself in chemicals.

Thanks. I'll have to check the out. Nice thing about our WM is I can get to the sporting goods section by going through the Jiffy Lube and tire section. I encounter far fewer People of Walmart that way!!!![^]
 
.............lol. i meant west marine not walmart. i'm guessing the part is probably available here on boatfix as well as its from sealand.

Good grief! I'm out for a few days because I'm snowed in, and a war breaks out!

Having read farther on, it seems like it was more teasing and horsing around than anything else. So c'mon, I know everybody's got cabin fever, but let's all be gentlemen and get through this crappy winter without fighting! OK?
 
I met an older boater at my lake last summer, said he dumps a cup of pine Sol in his tank after every pump out, and then at the end of each season. Said he has been doing it for years with no problems and his tank never stinks! I was thinking about trying it this summer.
