How to tell when your holding tank is full?

I can never tell when my tanks are getting full until it's too late and the tiolet won't flush.
How can I tell when they are gettign close to full. Is there something I can add to the tank to tell me the level?
 
The Snake River monitor works great and is a snap to install because the sensor is mounted on the outside of the tank but they will not work on a metal tank.
 
Having had more than one nasty blast in the face from an overly full tank & a weak vent system, we have: 1. tried to pump out no longer than each 3 days, or when ever we refuel; 2. Learn to open the deck pump out fitting ever soo slowly; if it hisses, we stop & use the alternate system to empty the tank w/o the fecal blast. The plan is to install a Snake River unit this year.
 
What's your tank made of? If it's fiberglass and semi-transparent, you can shine a flashlight against it to see the level. A Snake River monitor is a more elegant solution. ;)

I use the Raritan 4 tank monitor system, 1 for the waste tank and 2 other sensors on the 2 freshwater tanks. Once in awhile I will check the accuracy of the senders. I am glad I just installed a Hold-N-Treat with a PuraSan system makes pump outs a thing of the past when we are out of NDZ's. I hate pump outs half of them are broken some are not strong enough to pull my waste and the other 25% seem to work lousy odds but that is boating on the south Jersey shore area.

If we spend a 3 day weekend out on the boat, we pump out on the way in.
If we just spend a few hours here and there, we wait till we fill up.
We keep our boat at a boat yard with no services. I am thinking about
talking with a couple dock mates to see if they want to go in on one
of those pumpout wagons.

Consider Raritan's Hold 'n Treat system. It will be cheaper up front and easier to deal with in the long run. Besides, group purchases always turn into a mess :-)
 
Already considered it. I have no more room anywhere for one.
The pump out is just a few hundred yards down from us. I
just stop on the way in. But I hate to stop when there are
boats all piled up around the finger dock with fuel pumps
and pumpout located on it. The USCG has pretty much taken
over the dock also, and no one has the balls to tell them
anything.
I am already on thin ice with them for the argument I had
with them last week when they accused me of dumping gas
into the water. But that is another thread.

After a couple of blasts in the face also, I installed the Snake River monitor 3 years ago , and like Mike said it is easy if you have access to your tanks...So far it has been very accurate...I also installed one on the fresh water tank...
 
I Don't know if posting a link is OK or not as BoatFix sells monitoring systems...Try a Google search...
 
They've changed their search feature on the BoatFix website, and I haven't figured out how to use it yet. Call Mike Sibley at BoatFix, (603) 856-8841, ext. 252 - he can help you to find what you need.
 
The holding tank level monitor never worked from day one ~ they could never fix it, and I gave up. I count the number of flushes. About 10 is when I start calling the pump out boat when on the hook. About 12 is when the toilet doesn't flush. About 13 is when we break out the pail. About 15 is when we abandon the boat.
 
I believe George said that Boatfix stopped carrying Snake River systems. If you google them, a number of sites pop up.

Where would you dump the pump out wagon?
I am glad I converted to a large holding tank,a head that uses little water, installed a Hold-N-Treat along with a PuraSan. Best move ever. We can get over 60 flushes without having to worry or turn on the H-N-T system. I am now a Raritan man they make fantastic products and you are buying products made in the US.

There are several different tank level monitoring systems. I installed a SensaTank II a few weeks ago and it monitors the holding tank level as well as the fresh water tank level. The sensors stick on the outside of a (non-metalic) tank.

Guys, Dennis Ferriello was the sales manager for Snake River, and he and they departed ways a few years ago. He started his own company, Ferriello Sales - you can Google it. As near as I can tell, Snake River is virtually defunct these days.
