Maybe not now. but we are due... Sorry for the negitive Karma, Just be perpared !!!

Long Island and New YorkThough Gloria hit Long Island with winds of 95 to 100 miles per hour (153 to 160 km/h), wind gusts reached 115 miles per hour (185 km/h) in eastern Long Island.[12] Islip, New York recorded a wind gust of 85 miles per hour (137 km/h). However, few other wind reports were available from the island, as other weather instruments were damaged. Weather forecasters believe that damage across parts of Long Island indicated winds in the Category Three range, as evidence of the damage received at MacArthur Airport. Because the hurricane arrived at low tide, storm surges were generally low, peaking at 6.9 feet (2.1 m) at Battery Park. Because it moved quickly, Gloria failed to produce significant rainfall amounts, and caused only 3.4 inches (86 mm) of rain in Central Park.[2]

Gloria's high winds caused significant damage across Long Island and southeastern New York. The area hit the worst was eastern Long Island, where high wind gusts blew thousands of trees into buildings and across roads. The broadcast tower of WBLI-FM toppled on Bald Hill in Farmingville. In addition, the winds ripped roofs off of many buildings, including hangars at the MacArthur Airport and the roof of the Islip Police Station.[12] Prolonged exposure to high winds and waves led to moderate beach erosion, washing away several piers and docks.[12] The storm surge, though relatively weak, destroyed 48 houses on the ocean side of the island. Gloria's high winds left 683,000 people in New York without power, with some lacking electricity for over eleven days. Even though damage amounted to $300 million ($532 million in 2005 USD),[14] due to well-executed evacuations there was only one casualty, the death occurring from a falling tree.[12]

"there was only one casualty, the death occurring from a falling tree.[12]"

Only one tree died???

Honestly, I'm seeing "stuff" all over the map on this. In a 24/7 media info required world everything seems a guess. The local (20 miles from home) NOAA station is calling for tropical storms. Hannitty's talking weather head is calling for a repeat of '54 Carol.

Shy of God, I don't think any of them have a clue. I'm prepping as I would for any storm if I were haze grey.

David--Sure now, it would be a waste of good training to do otherwise!

The only thing to look at is the stuff which comes out of the NHC every 6 hours especially the discussion. Forget the talking heads on tv...

When you see the forecast track fairly stable at 3 days it s time to take it seriously

Irene is still forcast to track some where over Long Island. I'm beginning to start thinking about moving my family and pets to my inlaws house in farmingdale. There is only so much you can do with the boat and house and hope for the best.

The ground is so saturated that downed trees and wires may be a big issue. I already had a tree come down on my house with last friday's passing thunder storms.

Boat Crazy...Good luck in Long Beach, I wonder if all those tents and structures that were erected on the beach for the surf competition will be quickly taken down?

I'm in Pa. now but will be heading back Long Island tomorrow.

Just made arrangements to have the little boat hauled and put onto the trailer. Both boats are kept behind my rental house in massapequa, but the little boa worries me. With the larger engine, she sits more stern in the water. After last weeks rain fall I had about 2 inches of room before the transom went under. Not risking it, haul it and ill bring it to my garage and store it indoors. The Searay, should be fine, Ill add some extra lines, Ill take down the canvas (which works in my favor because the cockpit needs a good wash lol). If the house loses power I can run some of the house power on the genset from the boat so the tenants will be happy with that.

I'm gunna hang tough in our house...........if we loose power....I'll get in the M/H and fire up the genny....and send some juice to the house just to run my frig and sump pump. If it gets REAL bad and the canal floods my property .............I'll run like hell in our M/H.....screw the house.........its almost sold anyway !!!!

BC, don't you have a bilge pump in the smaller boat? If so, it should keep the water out. If it didn't, you should check to make sure it is working properly.

The float on mine stuck and it wasn't pumping out, I fixed it and now it works fine. I'm pulling the boat anyway...

Mike, yeah there is a pump. Its under the deck though. Its a self bailing deck which does nothing when the boat is sitting still. I was going to put a pump in the back on the deck but I figure just haul it and add the pump later..

I just spoke to my Marina, the boat is getting hauled today, and placed in their yard away from the trees. im still keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get lucky and Irene will miss us, but i'm betting otherwise. good luck to all, I hope everyone is safe, and our boats are OK after this thing passes..

NEW tide bars on slip poles... checked.
Doubled up all lines ... checked
Ran extra lines to alternate floating dock cleats.... checked

100 year old WOOD floating dock.... ummm **** !

This is not going to be fun !

Rob

Where you storing that new dinghy?
Does it have insurance? Alot of polices don't cover dinghies or only like $1000 in add-ons!

Hauled the boat today, putting the cover on the pool tomorrow, hope it's not too bad...
Did not see one other person hauling a boat today at high tide, surprised me a bit.

"100 year old WOOD floating dock.... ummm **** ! "

How tall are the pilings? A big concern is that docks float to the top and come loose. Tide will be above normal this week end which isn't going to help with the surge

Pascal,
Boats up a river in Riverhead. Pilings are spliced one on top of another. So we shouldn't run out of piling. ( The entire marina would be feet under water before we run out of piling ) My concern is 75% of the boat is anchored to a really old floating dock. That I have zero control over.

On another note they just pushed the Hurricane track west putting it right thru NYC.

Q: What is the worst side to be on when there is a hurricane? I have heard there is one side that is worse than the other.

A: The right side of a hurricane usually has the fastest winds, while the left side often has the heaviest rain. (Most people describe hurricane severity by wind speed not rain amounts, even though the number one cause of death in a hurricane is fresh water flooding.)

A hurricane is a whirling mass of thunderstorms that spins counterclockwise. As a hurricane moves, the wind on its right side blows in the direction of the storm's motion. That means a hurricane packing 100 mph winds and moving at 20 mph has a combined wind of 120 mph on that side of the storm. It also means that the forward motion of 20 mph takes away from the opposing wind on the left side of the storm: 100 mph - 20 mph = 80 mph. In this example, that's a 40 mph difference in wind from one side of the storm to the other. The forward motion has no effect on the wind in the front or rear part of the hurricane.

While storm surge generally occurs in the center of a hurricane, higher waves and the onshore wind in the right side of the storm can worsen the surge there. Also, tornadoes are most likely in the right-front part of a hurricane, which makes the right side that much worse.

Actually the winds show they will die down a little with it going more inland.
Not sure if this is better or worse for us.
If the eye hits east of the Island, then I assume we get N to NW west winds with water being pushed out of bay.
If eye hits more west of us, then we get south and east winds and water pushed into the bay.
But it will also slow the storm and reduce some of the punch!
This is gonna be a crap shoot.
I estimated I can handle a tide 6 feet above normal.
Higher than that and I am sinking!
I hate to haul the boat!
Guess wait till Saturday and see what it's doing then!

Check out Zanes link.

Always good to have a plan in place .
