Inverter..do it yourself job???

I wonder how many paying members Les has here, does anyone know?

I'm not positive, but I think there are around 18 paying members...If we do the math on that 18 x $20.00 = $360.00
No wonder he owns 1/2 of NewHampshire...he's rich from the BoaterEd profits...

I've been a subscriber for over 5 yrs. Every year I've saved more then $20 in the free, useful advise I get on these forums! And then I save more money when I order from boatfix.com.

I don't have a comprehensive list, but in our area, I know that myself, FlyWright, Flutterby, jmheiffer, jtby15(Charlie) and a few others have ponied up the money. I've never run an operation like this, but I'm relatively sure that Les isn't getting rich from it.

...and give up my avatar? hmmmmmm That's a mighty high price for an anchor. I'll have to think about that one.

Thanks, jmeirhoffer!!

Your welcome, and you can call me John, it's easier to pronounce. I usually forget to sign my first name.

Please don't get me wrong I'm not bagging on Les and he is providing a great site to collaborate on. I have been a paying member before, that being said there are other sites that do not charge. The Web is full of great resources. The math is pretty simple if he has 5,000 paying members he is collecting about $100K, plus on-line store revenue. I suspect Les is doing alright by it and my hat's off to him for making it work. Running a website isn't that costly nor is maintaining it that difficult if your computer literate.

Charlie, It's a question of value. Does the site provide something of value to you? Are you willing to pay a moderate price for that value?

If you go into a restaurant and are served in a suitable manner, it's common that you tip the wait staff 15-20%. Many of us do it and think nothing of it. It's expected and deserved. On a $50 meal, that's about $10.

We're talking about offering the tip you'd pay for 2 meals for a year's worth of advice and entertainment. Yes, there are other places you can get entertainment and advice, but is it of the same quality? I doubt it.

Can you get it for free from this site? Sure. Do you have to pay for it? No. It's a lot like tipping the wait staff. LYCBYG.

This inverter project is taking a bit longer than expected. The one day installation time frame is turning into two weeks. More specifically, the installer said the brand new inverter was fried upon installation. Just wasnt working. I have to take it back to get a refund and see about getting another inverter. All the cables and wires are in the right place but the installer will not be available until the end of next week. I'm somewhat impatient by nature I suppose. I dont like things to linger. I like to do the research and then get it done. Im learning that with boats, things are rarely completed within the projected time frame.

Don't know what inverter you purchased but SOME of them will fry instantly if the neutral and ground are connected ANYWHERE on the boat. Something to check.

Been there done that!

When all else fails, read the directions!!!

Hmmmm ........ I've been biting my tongue but inverter fried out of the box installed by the electrician who mistook batteries for 24 volt. Sometimes the BEST price is not the cheapest! Hope that West Marine honors the warranty .......... I'm starting to see why they have to get higher prices. ;-)

Hope it all works out for you Wayne

The saga of "Installing a simple inverter" continues. What will happen next?

Wayne, boating is a good way to learn patience----whether you want to or not! Sorry to hear about this new wrinkle.

This has turned into my favorite internet saga. Thank you for footing the bill our pleasures.
This can play out one of four ways. First, maybe the unit was not tested at the factory (this isn't likely). Second, maybe it was fried by another customer and returned then sold to you. Third, maybe it was fried by your installer who realized a mistake when he smelled it, and corrected it too late. Forth, maybe he is about to fry another one.
I for one am hoping that the #2 plays out. That is the best senerio. If the box was factory sealed, darn. #3 is my second hope. This way, your new unit has a chance of working. If it is #1, then you have the problem that the replacement is just as likely to fail as the first one. And it might fail while you are underway. And if it is #4, for his sake, I hope you don't carry a gun.

I should rename my boat ADVENTURE because it certainly has been. Some upgrades have been smooth as silk. GPS install, canvas, delivery etc...all very smooth...carb rebuild and now inverter install..not smooth.

I suppose that's how life works in general. Either way, the job will get done. But flutter..we think the same way. I got a brand new inverter, reputable brand..Xantrex HF inverter charger..brand new out of the box and it fried? What is the likelihood of that? It's normally human error right?

Now here is what complicates the matter. The installer spent a day threading wires through the boat..about $400 bucks worth of cable and now needs to leave for a week. I am now attached by the hip to this installer. I still trust he can do a good job. This guy sailed around the world in a 40 foot boat and has done inverter installations before.

Time reveals all. So, I'm a busy guy with a demanding job, wife and kid. This makes small tasks like returning an inverter and buying a new one rather difficult to complete. I have time commitments throughout the week which make it difficult to get boat related things done during store hours. I guess that's one big reason why I dont do my own work on my boat. Even if I could do it..Im lacking in time and energy after a long work day, commute and time spent with wife and kid.

Anywho..I will continue to keep the board updated with my boating adventures, upgrades and debacles. If anything it makes for interesting conversation and learning experiences.

Wayne,

One thing you have going for you is that you bought a Xantrex. The inverter that I installed was a true sine wave Pro-Sine (owned by Xantrex) and after a week of use, it failed. I went thru the trouble shooting procedure with them on the phone and they concluded that the inverter was defective. However, they didn't have any of that model in stock so they shipped me, at no charge) the next larger size and let me use it for about two months until they could replace the one that I had. The customer service experience was one of the best that I have had, so I'm confident that you'll end up with a new unit. Hope all goes well.

One thing i dont have going for me is my stereo and gps are not working. I went to the boat tonight just to check things out. The GPS buttons light up indicating its getting some form of power but the screen does not. The stereo does nothing. Im calling the installer in the morning to figure out exactly what happend when the brand new inverter "fried". Lets hope he has insurance.
